There aren’t many films launches these days that could be classed as truly epic, but for those who have read the acclaimed novel Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell, it’s obvious that a film adaptation couldn’t possibly be anything but. The novel itself consists of six nested stories, spanning generations, time and geography, and the new film by acclaimed filmmakers The Wachowski’s (The Matrix) and Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run) and featuring an all star cast including Academy Award® winners Tom Hanks, Halle Berry and Jim Broadbent as well as Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess, James D’Arcy, Hugh Grant and Zhou Xun, is a masterpiece, albeit a trippy one.
Having premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival at the weekend, to an emotional and moving 10 minute ovation, Cloud Atlas explores how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, present and future. Action, mystery and romance weave dramatically through the story as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and a single act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution in the distant future.
In cinemas nationwide February 2012, Cloud Atlas, is not to be missed.
