The Hawkesmoor

Inside the Hawksmoor restaurant

by John Gregory Smith

Ok, so I know I have slightly missed the mark on this one, but I finally went to Hawksmoor 7 Dials and it was amazing! The wonderful restaurant, which is set in a cavernous basement, had a small bar at one end and a large wood paneled dining room at the other, filled to the brim with people eating, what turned out to be, the best steak in London.

Our epic dinner began with a round of Dorset rock oysters (£12 for half dozen) and Tamworth pork belly ribs (£9), which were slow cooked with spices and glazed with honey. I can’t tell you how wonderful these sticky things were. Each mouthful was an absolute pleasure, savoury and sweet, with a slight aniseed flavour from star anise in their marinade.

Next we went onto the beef  – 1.1kg prime rib on the bone, cooked as chef recommended, for three of us. It was the best steak I have ever eaten. Charred and well seasoned on the outside and pink and juicy all the way through – complete perfection, they nailed it. This was the reason why, every time I have tried to book a Hawksmoor, it’s always packed. We ordered a selection of sides and dips to accompany our beef; triple cooked chips, peas and lettuce, mac cheese (all £4), a wonderfully salty anchovy butter and a creamy béarnaise sauce (both £2). The sides, like the beef, were delicious and all beautifully prepared.

This really was fantastic food, a must-eat for every carnivore out there!

The new Hawksmoor Guildhall has just opened for a soft launch.
