Whether in a Versace suit or light blue scrubs, we love Patrick Dempsey. Star of hit hospital drama Grey’s Anatomy, Dempsey is heating up the big screen this week in Valentine’s Day.

While many assume him to be extensively educated because of his super-smart Grey’s character Derek Shepherd, Dempsey did not even graduate high school. Discouraged by his diagnosis with dyslexia, he opted out of education in pursuit of a more exciting career: the circus. Sharpening his impressive juggling skills, Dempsey had dreams of going to clown school because he loved entertaining so much. This dream was waylaid when he got involved with downhill skiing, almost qualifying for the Olympic team.

Finally moving on to acting, he began work in several regional theatre productions, followed up by an unimpressive first attempt at television. He began his recognizable career in a series of films that featured him as a nerdy teen chasing older women. This is interesting to note, as it was around this time in his life that he married his first wife, Rocky Parker. This is ironic because Parker was almost 30 years older than Dempsey, and, still interestingly, the mother of his best friend. We aren’t surprised this one didn’t last. In any case, some of Dempsey’s notable early films include Can’t Buy Me Love, About a Boy and Sweet Home Alabama.

In the early 2000s, Dempsey decided to give television another go, landing recurring roles on Will & Grace and Once & Again. Next, Dempsey auditioned for the role of Gregory House on House, M.D., but it was another medical drama that ended up scoring the future McDreamy. Speaking of Grey’s Anatomy, big things are happening for Dr. Shepherd onscreen. With his recent on-screen, “post-it note” marriage to Ellen Pompeo’s character Meredith Grey fresh in his mind, he is taking on the role of chief of surgery at Seattle Grace Hospital. This should bring quite a bit of drama for the remainder of the season.

Other than Valentine’s Day, some of Dempsey’s more recent movies include Enchanted and Made of Honor. Though his characters in these films share McDreamy’s charming personality, his film career remains distinct from his television gig. His third career appears to be as a spokesman, as he is the face of both Versace and Men’s Avon.

At home, Dempsey loves spending time with his wife, Jillian Fink and their three children. He is also an avid auto racer, racing on a regular basis. Do we see yet another career in his future?
