Our beloved Justin Timberlake is making his directorial debut with three short commercials for his new alcohol brand, 901 Silver Tequila

Timberlake, CEO and co-founder of 901 Silver Tequila, came up with the name because 901 is the area code of his hometown of Memphis, Tennessee.  The name was also chosen because 9:01 p.m. is the time when evening ends and night begins – or the time that partying starts for most night owls.

 Timberlake visited the Tequilera Newton distillery in Jalisco, Mexico in order to help create the “smoothest and finest” tequila.  The recipe, originated by Don Enrique, was passed down to his son and then his grandsons, who perfected the tequila using the Blue Weber Agave plant which is responsible for the smoothness of the drink.

The “Sexy Back” singer decided to market the alcohol on its characteristic smoothness, ending each of his short ads with his own voiceover, “901 Tequila: Uncommonly Smooth.”

The three ads, part of the “Tequila is Liberty” campaign created by The Martin Agency, have just been released on YouTube. The first of the three ads, titled “Let Them Eat Cake,” features a woman making a metaphor between eating cake and ruling an empire, which is then followed by sexual innuendo.  The second, “Improved by Use,” shows several men out at the bar, and the third, “Risk and Peril,” features a bondage theme.  The majority of the campaign was filmed at the Standard Hotel in Los Angeles.   

The “Tequila is Liberty” campaign will continue, with print and television ads to be released in September 2010 and the spring of 2011.
