Project Nim is a fascinating documentary that follows the 1970s story of Nim, a chimpanzee that was essentially taught to live his life as a human.
The premiere goal of Project Nim was to teach Nim how to communicate with humans via sign language. He lived with a sign language teacher and her family, while founder Professor Herbert Terrace kept track of Nim’s progress and development. But what began as an intense science experiment quickly turned into something even more complicated – Nim formed strong bonds with his human family, and as he grew older, he became increasingly difficult to tame within a human household. The once-fine line between animals and humans continued to widen, and while he able to communicate to an astonishing degree, his behavioral issues were impossible to ignore.
The film hits theaters 12th August 2011.
