Award For Best BAFTA Beauty: Helen Mirren

Of all the show-stopping beauty looks from last night’s BAFTA Awards, including Jennifer Lawrence’s grey smoky eyes and straight-from-the-catwalk dual-textured hair, Thandie Newton’s au naturale curls and Marion Cotillard’s matte red mouth, it was Dame Helen Mirren who stole the show.

Dressed in an elegant dove grey embroidered Nicholas Oakwell Couture dress, the 67 year old actress showcased her newly cropped and layered hair that had been dyed a surprisingly flattering shade of pastel pink to perfection.

According to Jessie Knight, Senior Colourist at John Frieda and Helen Mirren’s stylist for the evening, the look was all Helen’s idea, “My brief was ‘let’s do something fun’ so out came the crazy colour which is a really easy way to have temporary but instant fun with your colour. We went for a soft pastel pink which worked really well with Helen’s naturally soft skin tone.”

The Hitchcock actress, who was nominated for the Best Actress award, may have kept her sartorial stylings muted to avoid any colour clashing but, never one to shy from the limelight, Mirren set off her newly coloured crop with bright bubblegum pink lips and a sweep of skin brightening rosy blusher.

Having proved just how flattering a candyfloss colour can be, at any age,  if you’re keen to experiment with the trend a la Mirren, we’d suggest taking baby steps first. L’Oreal Paris Feria Pastel Collection uses soft powdery shades of  lilac, pink and peach to add a translucent ice-cream coloured tint to blonde hair in just 15 minutes, and lasting just 3-5 washes. Or for something a little more permanent head to Dalston hair-colouring mecca, Bleach London where you’ll be in the safest hands for any number of dip-dye, highlight or all-over hair colour options.
