For me, going from day to night is something I try to do every day of the year. It’s about being prepared for the unexpected, always ready to act on an impulse or a party invitation; at this time of year it’s crucial.

There are two ways of doing day to night. The first is the clean sweepers. You start your day in whatever is your basic look of the moment – minimal or maximal, but whatever it is that you do that says ‘daytime’.   And you take with you smoky glittering eyes, pouty lips, super gloss, foundation and blush if you don’t wear it during the day.

This works if you are the type of person that doesn’t mind carrying out a full make-up bag and isn’t afraid to get too drunk and leave it all in a taxi. This is for a person who needs the confidence of a full mini-makeover and has at least 20 minutes between leaving work and arriving at the event.

The second way to do day to night is to be an all-day chameleon. Your day look is good to go for night,

apart from a few subtle additions or retouches that may take three minutes.  A bit of added shimmer here or there, this is the look that I have always favoured. I have a wardrobe full of black dresses in a viscose crepe material. I like to call them my ghosts. Each one is a shadow of another. I’ve worked at this look. You can dress it up or down. It is what it is and it takes you to work, to tea, to meetings, to parties, to being languid and comfortable in your own home and ethereal on the red carpet. So the make-up follows this metaphor, it’s a blend of being comfortable and luxurious

It’s all about the eyes and giving them staying power.  A couple of my recent discoveries: Urban Decay has an Eye Shadow Primer potion which gives the colour depth and staying power. It comes with a pretty palette of muted glittery tones, being an all time favourite day to night basic. MAC do a beautiful cream colour base soft shadow in brushed metal and highlighter in pink platinum brushed metal.  The same colours go from ‘subtle’ to ‘wow’ very easily.

Prescriptives Caviar Sparkle does a similar thing.  It blends luxury and decadence with wearability. The

added party sparkle comes from this season’s essential, Urban Decay’s Glam Rock Eyeliner. Transparent silver glitter is a 30 second transformation to rocking out the full party look.If you are the clean sweeper you will need Face Boutique’s Sweep Clean Cleansing Cloths. They do an efficient and quick job for you to start all over again while on the go.  The Bobbi Brown Shimmer Palette is a friend for both types.  When in doubt it’s always best to shimmer.

The lipstick and lashes conundrum: it is possible to do lashes that last all day if you involve false ones.  Some people like a look where they go to the gym in tinted moisturiser and fake lashes.  For some people lashes are everything.  The night look would involve a little eyebrow definition, and that’s it. It is a glamorous and easy statement.  But if you don’t feel confident about wearing full lashes in the day then your trusted mascara must be a constant companion.  Prescriptives has come out with a super soft and long lasting one.  MAC’s is always good and thick and strong.

look and red is more night than day to night.  But a creamy deep gladioli pink is not only a perfect compromise it’s much more fun when it comes as part of the MAC Dame Edna Everage range.  It comes in a lovely lilac with silver stars packaging with red glittery Dame Edna glasses.  Just looking at it makes me smile as if I’m holding a pomegranate martini. Dame Edna Everage is a strange choice of fashion icon, but also genius.

Make-up and shoes have always been the most important thing to Dame Edna’s creator Barry Humphries because he loves texture and transformation among other things.  He once had some skins sent to me from a rare species of toad. He’d had some of his erotic books bound in this same skin because of its potential hallucinogenic qualities.  Shoemaker Caroline Grove transformed it into pink and mink Dame Ednarish platforms with toad heels. The colour exactly matches this lipstick.

If that feels a little excessive (as far as I’m concerned a must of the season), Bobbi Brown’s Pot Rouge for lips and cheeks in pink raspberry has gloss and staying power and is easy to re-apply.  The raspberry pink is one of those colours that is hard to go wrong with, it suits everyone by managing to be funky yet accessible.
Pink is a great party pout and the perfect shade gets you through day and night. I recently met up with Lily Allen and noticed she was sporting the pink. “It’s Schiap by NARS,” she said. It was a standout colour but it didn’t stand out too much. Lily was sat down at the Ivy Club doing interviews in the day and relaxing in the evening with the perfect colour to take her through.
