Bobbi Brown Holiday Collection 2013

Bobbi Brown Holiday Collection 2013

Every year at around this time most beauty brands do a party special. Think ancient pots of glitter eyeliner and gold-flecked mascara that might be good for Halloween. Think tragic fluorescent pink and gold bronzer/blush. You could only possibly wear it in a darkened disco where you in fact are the flashing light.

Box sets of glitz are never done well. I hate the idea of looking like a clown, even for a party. They are usually the antithesis of Old Hollywood.

Bring on Bobbi Brown’s Holiday Collection 2013 that celebrates Old Hollywood. It is sultry and subtle with iconic colours, shiny reds and shimmering golds.

Their lip colour in a red called Old Hollywood comes in an elegant gold case. You can hear it click shut as if you’re Katherine Hepburn preparing for a scene with Spencer Tracy.

It’s an excellent shade of red. It’s not a blue crimson red, but it’s not overly orange. Red that goes on like a block colour can be frightening, but if it’s too sheer it’s pointless. This one is the perfect mix. The siren red lip gloss adds a voluptuous sheen.

The Old Hollywood Eye Palette is filled with metallic bronze that can enhance a steamy charcoal. There’s a pale gold and a dark gold and a silver shimmer.

I’m also impressed with the new Ink Liner. I’ve never been able to use a felt pen style liner because the tip is usually too soft and that requires too steady a hand. This one is extremely pointy and stiff, so it doesn’t take much to deliver precision.

This can be teamed with the Long Wear cream shadow stick to provide smudginess.

The Festive nail polish comes in Solid Gold, which is as gold and as solid as it says, and Chrome, which is a glittery affair, and Tuxedo Black. These work well together using the golds as base colour and the blacks on the tips.

I saw that look on Cher when I interviewed her recently and I was instantly jealous of it. It conjures old Hollywood glamour with a modern decadent twist like no other.

Old Hollywood Lip Colour £22.00, Lip Gloss £18.00, Nail Polish £11.00, Shadow Stick £20., Ink Liner £20., Eye Palette £59.
