Chanel Launches Third Coco Scent, Coco Noir

Those covetable interlocking C’s and signature squared cut-glass bottle have had a darkly gothic update as Chanel announce the launch of their brand new fragrance, Coco Noir. In homage to the founder Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, who famously announced, “a women who doesn’t wear perfume has no future”, the new black-bottled scent will be the third in the Coco series, following on from the original  - a spicy oriental  created in 1984 and Coco Mademoiselle, the 2001 floral, patchouli-based oriental.

Christopher Sheldrake, perfumer for Chanel, told WWD‘Noir sits in its own space. We are careful not to launch a lot of fragrances — we choose to create scents that represent an era, not a passing fancy.’

The perfume itself has been created by in-house nose Jacques Polge who has said, ”For Coco Noir, I thought of Coco and of Coco Mademoiselle too, because it’s also part of the history. I wanted to continue exploring an entire aesthetic range of CHANEL perfumery, a range that distinguishes itself from the Florals, one that is illustrated by Bois-des-Iles and Cuir de Russie. I took it up with Coco. It’s what I like to call the CHANEL Coromandel culture, what you see and feel in her apartment. The night vision of the ‘Orient that starts and ends in Venice’ imposed itself upon me and that is where I wanted to go.”

Due to launch in September, Rouge Noir will boast top spicy and citrus top notes of grapefruit, orange and Calabrian bergamot, a heart of jasmine, rose, red geranium and Indonesian patchouli, whilst Brazilian tonka bean, Bourbon vanilla, sandalwood, frankincense and white musk create the base.

Equally as mysterious as this dark, oriental fragrance, is the question as to who Chanel will choose to be the face of Coco Noir, following in the footsteps of brit beauties Kate Moss and Keira Knightley, who both featured in the ad campaign for Coco Mademoiselle.

The scent is set to launch internationally in September. Until then here’s the first teaser. . .
