The fragrance halls are full to brimming with girly celebrity scents. There’s pop royalty Britney, Christina Aguilera and Taylor Swift. There is the Nicky Minaj fragrance of course, with its interchangeable heads, the Kim Kardashian perfume and multiple editions of the Rihanna fragrance brand. Shakira has one, Beyonce has one. Sarah Jessica Parker’s Lovely and Jennifer Lopez’ Glow have been amongst some of the most successful. Even Shania Twain has one! It seems to be a right of passage for female celebrities, and it seems the trend is catching on with the male set too.
David Beckham’s Classic EDT 90ml (£33.95) has been ruling the male fragrance roost since its 2013 release, but has recently been toppled by an altogether more blingy scent. Jay Z’s Gold Jay Z EDT 90ml (£45.00) launched this year and with all the appropriate fanfare of a celebrity-of-the-moment launch.
The fragrance itself has notes of violet leaf, cypress lavender and vetiver at its heart, which is blended with yellow ginger, white cardamom and grapefruit as well as a hint of blueberry. The base is a blend formed of golden amber patchouli, teak and bouron vanilla. The flask is white, matte and minimal with a flash of raised gold, and was designed by Jay Z himself.
Ilias Ermendis is the renowned perfumer tasked with putting the scent together, and spoke animatedly bout his muse. ‘I was impressed wth Jay Z’s style and confidence and was drawn to the ease with which he carries himself and all of his success. He has a natural cool that people want a piece of. In developing Jay Z Gold I wanted to capture both the vibrant ambitious part of Jay Z’s charismatic persona and his effortless style that he naturally embodies through a fusion of notes chosen by him.’
The fragrance launched in the middle of February, and if it’s toppling of celeb fragrance king David Beckham is anything to go by, it must be doing something right!
Now there’s one man every guy wants to be, every woman wants to be with, and presumably, most people want to either smell or smell like. The name’s Bond. James Bond. Since Daniel Craig took on the role in a fresh spurt of films there was a 007 sized hole in the fragrance market, which was thankfully filled with the release of the James Bond 007 EDT 75ml (£31.50) fragrance.
It’s impeccably Christmas-timed limited editions have seen it top the must-have cologne lists around that time, and the expertly designed bottles make it a wash bag necessity.
Now when we’re totting up the male celebrities that are in possession of their own fragrance, we’ve so far counted a rapper, a sports superstar and a fictional spy in the list. It may come as a surprise, therefore, that a new fully fledged cologne connoisseur comes in the form of Dandy-esque British actor Richard E Grant. He’s famed for his well-spoken roles in Jack and Sarah, Withnail & I and his now acclaimed role in Girls. But a fragrance? It’s a surprise and no mistake. But Richard E Grant’s new scent venture is born of a lifelong interest as opposed to any interest in capitalising on current fame, which is refreshing to say the least.
The perfume is called, quite simply, Jack, and will be available exclusively at Liberty and www.jackperfume.co.uk from 2nd April. The scent combines lime, marijuana, mandarin, pepper, clove, nutmeg, and frankincense in a bottle that represents the fruition of many a childhood dream. Richard E Grant grew up in Swaziland, where he would amuse himself by experimenting and concocting various perfume potions of boiled sugar water in jam jars with rose and gardenia petals.
And low and behold, who is the latest boy to be hopping on the perfume bandwagon? None other than ‘Happy’ singer Pharrell Williams. He’s teaming up with Comme Des Garcons on a fragrance called ‘Girl’, which, rather confusingly, is actually going to be a unisex fragrance. He’s such a crowd pleaser isn’t he?! Of his latest collaboration Pharrell said ‘As one of my favorite designers once said, ‘Comme des Garcons is your favorite designers’ favorite designer…the top of the top, the best of the best. I am so honored to be working with Comme des Garcons and cherish the education that I’ve experienced in this collaboration.’ Such a polite one! The collaboration seems too good to be true. The experience and quality with a renowned designer fragrance brand, coupled with the freshness and enthusiasm of one of the most talked about musical sensations of the moment. We can’t wait to sample the final product, and will be sure to let you know when we do.
