Hollywood makeup artist and Founder and Creative Director of Kitten Vixen cosmetics, Geraldine Shaker, is best known for doing the faces of celebs such as Sharon Stone, Kiera Knightley, Drew Barrymore, Bruce Willis and Vin Diesel… and we managed to steal a few minutes of her time to quiz her about anything and everything makeup related.

So, if you want to know what next season’s trends are or just how to create the perfect party look, read our Q&A with Geraldine below:

Mimi: It’s the Christmas Party Season coming up, what’s your most requested look?

Geraldine: I would say the smoky eye is probably the most requested; it’s a dramatic look that most women struggle to create on their own.

M: Is this your favourite look, if not what is?

G: I love the smoky eye; it’s a dramatic look than can be made more or less extreme depending on the colour choice, obviously the deeper, the shade the more dramatic the look!

M: We can’t help but love the smoky eye look for the evening, do you have any tips to create an updated version of the classic?

G: Go for an unexpected colour and layer it. I love using burgundy with a sheer gold on top of it, or navy blue with silver. Apply black liner to the wet line of the eye and the look is dramatic without being OTT.

M: For people that prefer a bright lip to the smoky eye, what’s your top-tip for a Red Lip? How can we make ours’ last all night?

G: There are many products that claim to last all night, but if you’re going to be eating, drinking, kissing and generally having a great time you’re going to have to reapply at some point in the evening.

I like to use Cover Girl Outlast (BATD recommends Max Factor Lip Tint Pen as this isn’t available in the UK) as a base as that really does stain the lips, but if you want a glossy finish you need to add your favourite gloss on top.

M: What eye shadow shades do you think suit the following eye colours for the perfect party look?

G: I would opt for the universal jewel tones for all eye colours. If you want to change your look but stay in the safe zone, jewel colors are the ones to go for. Try burgundy, forest green or navy blue.

M: We’re all about finding new and reliable products here at BATD. What is your favourite of the following kit stapes?

G: I use different products on set and in regular day-to-day life. So my favourite products for day to day are:

Armani is great and I struggle with melasma so Clinique Even Better is really great too.

Helena Rubinstein wand-less mascara

Nars Bento Box (limited edition kabuki inspired lip gloss)

Make Up Forever gel liner

Kevyn Aucoin or MAC

M: You’ve done the makeup for some rather famous faces in the past (Drew Barrymore, Terry Hatcher and Kiera Knightley to name a few!). Who did you enjoy doing the makeup for the most? What look did you create for them.

G: When you work with big name actresses the look they always want is beauty. They want to sparkle in front of the camera, which means fresh dewy skin, barely pinched cheeks, and drama on the eyes or lips depending on the face. I love beauty make-up, it’s what I am known for, but the make-up I find most exciting and challenging is fashion, that’s where you really get to go wild!

M: What makeup trends do you predict being huge for next season (SS11).

G: Spring Summer 2011 is all about the Seventies; bright colours are back and bolder than ever!  Eyelids are washed with acid yellow and turquoise, and lips are bright orange, cherry red or fuchsia. Obviously the trends on the runway are over the top for impact. To make these trends more wearable, go for strong lips or a strong eye – don’t do both together. Or apply your favourite eye shadow in a Seventies style – take gold or a soft brown and apply it all the way up to the brow bone.

I think the most exciting trend this season was the pointed manicure in black and white with half moon shapes that was seen at the Jose Duran show in NYC Fashion Week – nails are a great way to make a subtle statement and update your look without spending a lot of money.

M: What one beauty product can you personally not live without?

G: That’s a hard question for a beauty junkie, if I had to pick one item it would have to be foundation. The right foundation brings warmth and glow to the skin so that you sparkle without looking like you’ve tried.
