Brigitte Bardot

In part two of this interview fills us in on how he educates his clients and why he loves the classic style of Brigitte Bardot.

I like to educate my clients on what product they should use, which is not just about hair type, it can change seasonally. People think we don’t have seasons in LA, but we certainly do. And once the season changes your hair does and you’ll need to change your shampoo, conditioner and some styling products. The main look for the LA salon right now is enhancing the natural. Making yourself the best you can be and not fighting against what’s already there. If you’ve got curly hair, don’t fight it. The flat iron is almost retired as a hair straightener anyway because that flat iron look is very out.

If you have dark dark hair don’t dream to be blonde. Yes, it’s true there are a lot of blondes in LA. This season it’s more about the golden and the copper than the bleached. But I am not saying that less is more, I am saying I want to make you look like a goddess and sometimes that takes less than you might think.

“I always talk to clients about the design options for their hair. Do they have time to blow dry their own hair? Do they have money to come in to be blown out each week? It’s important to know these things because the point is to make you glamorous all the time.”

Fabian’s inspirations – Madonna, Brigitte Bardot, Lynda Carter – are all sexy strong women with ultimate glam hair. What he likes to create is a version of that tailored to the individual. “For instance, you can get a Brigitte Bardot feeling from shorter hair and women shouldn’t be afraid to cut their hair, especially if it is looking thin because of ragged ends. I also love a bob for the right person. I used to be afraid of them because they show everything, every single cut. Although geometrics are not in at the moment, a classic bob will always look good and can work very well for fine hair. I’m all about making the most of what you already have.”

Fabian really does make the most of what you already have in a unique, almost magical way. He specialises in total makeover. He trained as a make-up artist with Laura Mercier and does make-up in the salon. He works backwards – eyelashes, eyes, concealer, foundation. His specific genius is the eyes. He applies single eyelashes (not eyelash extensions which make your eyelashes fall out) until he has a look that is subtle and demure or as screen goddess as required.

If your hair has just a trace memory of Brigitte and you have big lushious eyelashes to match you’d be surprised how little the rest of your face needed making up. Flesh coloured lips and concealer is all thats really needed for the look. That’s an impossible mix of goddess glamour and natural beauty. The overstatement and understatement in which Fabian specialises.

“Sometimes women in the salon look so vulnerable with a wet head and no make-up. I just want them to feel the best they can be, and make them go on feeling that. Not just when they are leaving the salon, but to keep on feeling that way.”
