Carly Zucker at Virgin Active Classic Twickenhams Fitness Walk of Fame

Virgin Active opened its 72nd London area location today! Yesterday we ran in for a sneak peak of this impressive new facility located in the South Stand at Twickenham Stadium. Need to revamp your routine? Virgin Active members enjoy dozens of exciting options, from a 50-foot climbing wall to cutting-edge Power Plates equipment. Virgin is on top of the latest exercise trends, but hasn’t forgotten the workout junkies’ favourites like the pool and spa, weights, and tread-climbers. We jumped into two fun classes at this gorgeous Twickenham facility.

Zumba
With a name like Zumba, you could hardly expect this aerobic dance class to be stuffy or boring! Created by Columbia fitness trainer Beto Perez, this programme has been sweeping the globe for the last 10 years. The classes feature traditional salsa, samba, and merengue moves set over pulsing Latin beats. For some people, a brightly lit, mirrored room might spell nightmare; at Virgin Active it was nothing to fear in this fast-paced, lively atmosphere.

The instructor was much like any: bubbly, impossibly toned, with pony-tail flying. During the more challenging moves, she would shout reassuringly, “Just keep moving! Don’t care what your feet are doing!” Good. No time to even think about how the thighs and tum are looking anyway! The beats kept the adrenaline pumping and the funky Latin moves kept us giggling (at ourselves, naturally). A great work out—incorporating abs, legs, and arms—that feels too fun to be exercise.

Gymsticks

Gymsticks

Gymsticks
Don’t be afraid when you see the equipment, but Gymsticks is truly a revolution in the exercise world. Consisting of a long stick with two elastic bands that attach to your feet, it can look a bit daunting, but definitely worth the funny looks you’ll get in the gym. Known mostly for the superb posture it gives you, but also for its versatility. From cardio and conditioning to muscle strengthening and Pilates, it’s got everything you need and you don’t even need to be in the gym. But for your first time it’s best to take a class, just to see how the whole operation works; we would have been lost without it.

Our instructor had us work our abs, arms, legs, shoulders, and glutes and they were burning by the end of our one-hour session. Beginning as a group fitness concept in Finland, the idea was to combine simple exercise tools with choreographed moves. Don’t let it fool you though, you’ll definitely work up a sweat.
