Francis Kurkdjian

French perfumer Francis Kurkdjian was not born into a great perfume dynasty; from a young age he learned his discipline from activities including piano and ballet. By fifteen, he knew he was destined to turn perfume into a career. He produced his first scent at twenty-five, a fragrance for Jean Paul Gaultier. Since then, he has worked internationally in locales from New York to Paris and for fragrance companies like Takasago of Japan. Private clientele have also benefited from his personally tailored scents for years.

Kurkdjian celebrated the launch of his new fragrance line, Maison Francis Kurkdjian, in September 2009, and the 22nd October marks the opening of his jewel of a boutique in Paris. The boutique seeks to combine the old and the new, or as his architects put it, “history and potential.” The products themselves—flacons, cases, and packaging—are all Paris-inspired, naturally.

Aqua Universalis

Aqua Universalis

The stories, as he likes to call them make for a very fresh collection indeed, incorporating natural and fruity tones. Scents like Lumiere Noire, APOM (“a piece of me”), and Aqua Universalis will inspire images of attraction, the colors and flavours of the Middle East, and soft, clean sheets, respectively. The scents were designed with a universal idea in mind: in a world that is so inundated by smell-sensations, perfume should be a means of feeling clean and fresh any time of the day.

In addition to the perfumes—which are wearable by anyone, anywhere—the fragrances come in a range of exciting products. Your home and even your laundry can smell as fresh as you feel, using the interior perfumes, candles, incense papers, and cleaning liquids. The interior perfume can be used to infuse a room with a particular essence, while the candles and incense papers can bring a new breath and a little light to a dull room. The incense papers can also freshen up drawers, armoires, and even luggage. The cleaning liquids in Aqua Universalis provide a lift that will stay with your laundry long after it leaves the dryer.

Another unique product is the Tour Atour perfumed bracelet, a combination of perfectly crafted leather bands and a magnetized metal clasp. It’s available in a variety of scents, and will remain a personal treat on your wrist all day. Got a brood of little ones? Les Bulles d’Agathe (Agathe’s Bubbles) offer a fruity alternative to the traditional blowing bubbles. With these tinted, scented bubbles, children can discover the world of fragrances all while playing. They are available in 1.5 fl oz bottles of Pear, Cold Mint, and Cut Herbs scents.

This sophisticated and beautiful line is available at Liberty of London on Great Marlborough Street and (of course) at 5 rue d’Alger in the Paris boutique.
