Bicycle Crunch

Bicycle Crunch

With the unexpected heat wave this summer, we may find ourselves flocking to the beach more often than usual.  If we’re going to find the courage to bare it all in our bikinis, a good beach body workout may be just what we need to give us the confidence to strut our stuff.

Well, first things first – abs.  Who doesn’t want to have a flat, sculpted stomach when lounging in a bathing suit?  To remove flab and target the waistline, try the ‘bicycle exercise’.  Lie flat on the floor with your hands behind your head, bringing your knees up to a 45-degree angle.  Move your legs as if you are peddling a bicycle, and alternate touching each of your elbows to your opposing knees, focusing on using your abs to do so.

Now that you are beginning to feel the burn along your mid-section, it’s time to tone up those arms.  Grab a light weight, and do a seated triceps extension to tighten the back of those arms, which is where most of us have excess flab.  Begin by sitting on a bench or exercise ball and place the weight in both hands.  Bring the weight straight up overhead, with your arms next to your ears.  Lower the weight behind your head, with your elbows at about a 90 degree angle, feeling a slight squeeze in the back of your arms. Repeat.

Leg squat

Finally, it’s time to move onto the legs.  Virgin Active, one of the UK’s top health and fitness clubs, recommends doing your basic squat to help tone up the upper portion of your legs, one of the key areas for a more defined swimsuit body.  To do a squat, simply stand with your feet parallel and your legs shoulder-width apart.  Place your hands on your hips and lower yourself into the squat position, as if you were about to sit in a chair.  Then, stand up and straighten your legs (without locking the knees!) and repeat.

These are just a few of many exercises that you can do to tone up for that stellar bikini body.  For more information on beach body workouts and just getting in shape, visit www.virginactive.co.uk.
