2013 BAFTA awards

The 2013 British Academy of Film and Television Arts are right around the corner and Britain’s biggest television stars are prepping to get red carpet ready for the big event. The event’s official partners, M.A.C., St. Tropez, and Mark Hill have given us the inside scoop into the process and products that help the stars look glam for the award show. Whether you are a star getting ready for the red carpet or simply prepping for a night out with the girls, these tips can help you look and feel your best. Here’s the rundown on the behind-the-scenes preparation that goes into getting the BAFTA stars ready for the award show.

Skincare with St. Tropez

St. Tropez’s very own spray tan specialist, Kayla, gave us the scoop on how she gets the stars bronzed and sparkling for the big event. Due to this year’s gloomy weather, spray tans are in high demand from celebrities hitting the BAFTA carpet. To prepare, Kayla is setting up shop two days before the BAFTA’s to bronze the lovely nominees.

The first thought that comes to mind when I hear spray tan is ‘orange’, however, Kayla reassured that the St. Tropez products she uses are designed to catch the light and comes in three different option; dark, original, or sensitive. Celebrity fans of spray tanning include Emilia Fox,  who opts for the sensitive choice, and Millie Mackintosh, who likes to go dark and channel a bronzed Grecian goddess. The spray tan lasts up to a week, but the day of the event, a skin-finishing spray is used to give the skin a glimmer that catches light and illuminates.

Emilia Fox prefers a healthier glow for her sensitive skin.

Millie Mackintosh prefers to have a darker and bronzed glow on the red carpet.

Getting a spray tan that leaves the wearer looking bronzed and healthy instead of orange can be hard to find and expensive. Luckily, St. Tropez offers a variety of products that can be purchased here and done easily from home. The Sensitive line of self tanning is the brand’s most popular product. Their Rose Skin Illuminator is another product that is recommended to moisturize the skin while giving it some shimmer for instant luminosity.

Hair with Mark Hill

Mark Hill professional hair salon and their stylists revealed the inspiration behind this year’s biggest hair trends. The red carpet will have lots of 1920′s inspired up-do’s, think Daisy Buchanan from ‘The Great Gatsby.’ The Twenties inspired hairstyles will be flapper up-do’s and structured curls that fall shoulder length or short straight bobs. Bejeweled headbands and decorated clips are also a fun way to incorporate some sparkle to the up-do, giving it a little edge.

The second wave of inspiration for many of the hairstyles that will be seen on the red carpet are inspired from the popular British period soap, ‘Downton Abbey.’ The hairstyles will be elaborate up-do’s with tight curls and decorative hair accessories.

To achieve the look, they recommend their Work it Girl! spray, which can be purchased here. The spray is an all-in-one spray that protects the hair from damaging heat while giving it shine and hold.

Makeup with M.A.C

The final stop was makeup with M.A.C’s makeup artist, Pablo. The trick to being red carpet ready is a good primer to help the makeup last throughout the night. The primer serves as a base foundation to smooth and hydrate the skin so the makeup can apply more evenly. It provides a strong and long lasting palette to put the makeup on so the wearer does not have to skip out on any of the events festivities to reapply. A popular choice is their ‘Prep + Prime Skin Brightening Serum.’

A bold red lip will also be an upcoming trend. The trick to making it last all night is layering the lip products. You can buy the M.A.C. products here and if you are looking to try out a red lip, they have just collaborated with Rihanna to launch their new bold red lipstick.

The BAFTA red carpet is all about having fun, so it is the chance for the nominees to try something new with their looks. Hair, makeup, and dresses will stray away from the classically conservative long gowns. Play with a Twenties inspired up-do or incorporate a bold red lip to spice up an outfit. You may not be walking the red carpet, but these tips can turn heads anywhere you go!

The BAFTA awards are on Sunday, 12 May.
