Brigitte Bardot in Gainsbourg

Laetitia Casta as Brigitte Bardot in Gainsbourg

You may well not have heard of Serge Gainsbourg but you probably should have! He was a hugely influencial and infamous singer, songwriter, actor and director and was often in the public eye for his romances with celebrities such as Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin.

Gainsbourg (Vie héroïque) is a biopic of his life and stars the gorgeous Laetitia Casta as Bardot and we thought she looked so good we’d do a get the Bardot look.

The 60’s look was all about the sultry matte look and Bardot had this down to a T. Start with a mattifying foundation such as Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse. It’s cheap and cheerful but gives great coverage and just the look you need for this. Having created your flawless base, add definition by contouring your cheekbones in a matte bronzer such as Hoola from Benefit. Make sure you don’t over apply at this point, you don’t want to look like you’ve been in a mud fight… we’re going for sexy not smutty. Take the bronzer under the cheekbones and really shade them out so that they’re perfectly highlighted. If the matte look is slightly too much for you at this point take an illuminating powder (be it natural or bronzed) and lightly dust it over the face.

The eyes were the main focal point for all Bardot’s looks and they were super sultry. Begin by taking a charcoal shadow and shading in the socket line of the eye. Lightly dust the same colour over the lid a take a soft clean brush and blend everything in well. Having given the eye some depth, take a soft kohl liner and draw a heavy line around the entire eye/lash line, taking care to keep it in line with the feline shape you want at the end. Next take a stiff eye shadow brush and begin gently blending the kohl into the pre-applied shadow. Using the kohl in this way is not only super easy but it save on smudges, is easy to correct and gives the blackest look possible. Don’t take the line too far away from the original but do smudge it enough to give a sexy ‘undone’ look. Finally take the kohl pencil and colour-in the inner lash line and whack on serious black mascara (you may want to take some curlers to your lashes first) like Estee Lauder’s Double Wear mascara and you’re good to go to the next stage.

Again, stick to matte for this look. Take a nude lip pencil and outline the lips, following that step by colouring in the entire lip in the same pencil (to give a base). Then take a Lipstick like the upcoming new NARS Pure Matte Lipstick and dab it on (set to be available later in the year). There’s no need to paint the colour on as the look is all about slightly sultry smudges so use your finger to pat in the colour.

Finally turn your head upside down, give it a bit of a back-brush and hairspray, let it set then flip your head up again. This will give you a fab volumised bed-head look, perfect for the Bardot Look (although you can pop in some rollers whilst you do you makeup if you fancy a slightly more ‘done’ feel).

If you’d like to see the film it was released on 30th July nationwide so is in cinemas now.
