Good hair can instantly transform an outfit, a mood, even a day. Back in September, the fashion week catwalks were alive with twists, curls, flicks and slicked back sections, all sent down the runway to dazzle and inspire us well ahead of schedule for our SS14 style overhauls. There are some looks though that we just can’t wait that long to try out.

There was a visible lean towards volumised dos in the SS14 hair stakes. We’re not the talking overly backcombed Bardot-esque bouffants that have been slightly overexposed as of late. For SS14 volume is coupled with effortlessness.

The just-rolled-out-of-a-beach-hammock look made its mark for the likes of Michael Kors, Rodarte and Alexander Wang. Whether the hair was collected into a loose pony, twisted into a relaxed ballet bun or left flowing loose over illuminated shoulders, the base style was one of tousled and volume-wealthy waves.

The key is to forget about perfection. The waves you tong don’t need to be uniform because you’re going to muss them up. The hairspray you use doesn’t have to fix those tendrils into place, because you need movement. Take a deep breath, relax and style without a care.

BATD met with celebrity stylist Christian Wood who gave us a backstage insight into creating the SS14 look. Here are the steps he advises following to achieve it.

Step 1 - Prep your hair. Healthy looking hair is essential to this look, and healthy hair shines. You can’t get simpler than that. Before drying your hair add a nourishing serum such as Dove Style + Care Frizz-Free Shine Cream Serum (£4.59) to the mid-lengths and ends of hair. This will not only benefit the condition of your hair in the long term, but it will give you that must-have shine of SS14.

Step 2 - Curl. Most will use tongs but as long as you are giving yourself a wave that will last, it is very much up to you how you achieve it. Use a method that fits into your day-to-day routine. If your styling process is as hassle-free as possible, you’ll be more inclined to keep to it and less likely to rush the process. Nicky Clarke Classic Compact Heated Hair Rollers (£19.99) are an easy way to get loose waves in larger sections of hair and retaining shine. Just remember to protect your hair from the heat. Dove Style + Care Heat Protect Spray (£4.59) can be applied before or after drying, so there’s no excuses.

Step 3 - Make it your own. You have your base, now it’s time to play around with it. This is the part of the process that you can change up each time. Start by mussing up your look. Your aim is to break down the uniformity of those waves. Make sure there is no heat in the hair, then run your hands through the waves to separate the sections. Next take a dry shampoo, yes a dry shampoo! Think of it as a clever dry styler instead of a in-between-washes pick-me-up.

Using a transluscent product like Dove’s new Refresh + Care Dry Shampoo (£4.59) will give you volume and texture without any residue. First spray into roots to add body. Next apply to the mid-lenths and ends and concentrate on tousling and twisting odd sections as you go. The finishing touches are up to you.

If you go for an up-do make sure to pull odd tendrils free to float whispily around your face, the Michael Kors SS14 look created by Orlando Pita is a beautiful example. It evokes images of flirty flush-cheeked Austen heroines skipping through the countryside, the wind and stray branches undoing the precise work of their lady’s maid that morning.

Or make like Rodarte SS14 and fix your hair to one side, making sure to keep the volume high on the side of the shoulder your hair falls over.

Have a go yourself and find out just how easy this perfectly imperfect look is. Stay ahead of the trends this season, don’t wait until Spring hits before you get tousling. Carefree summer waves tumbling over a thick and luxuriously cosy cable-knit scarf is the epitome of effortless style, and the perfect way to imbibe your Autumn look with the lightheartedness of Spring.
