I carry a make-up bag that is filled like a giant jigsaw puzzle with pencils, brushes, creams, shadows, mascaras. Whichever object is my new favourite I cling on to it and the bag expands to bursting point.

The other day I thought I’d lost my Joey Healy Brow Renovation Serum and I couldn’t leave the house till it was found. Certain products really do change your life and the way you feel about yourself.

There have been many of these must have hero products over the years, but there’s been one which has been a constant and it is the Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-In-Place Eye Pencil. I’ve tried a million pencils, liners, pots that come with a brush that you smudge across but none of them are better than this pencil as an eyeliner.

For a start I don’t like brushes because you have less control. You can end up with a thin spidery indelible line or a 1960s Elizabeth Taylor goes Cleopatra chunky one. But the whole reason I never forayed into liquid liner was because often an eye-lining pencil is just not soft enough. I hate the feeling of scraping across the eyelid.

For a while I dipped powder into a little flat brush. Invariably the powder fell underneath my eyes giving me an unwanted panda look.

I love make-up but I’m not great at applying it. I want to apply it quickly and efficiently. I don’t have time to be careful or to have made mistakes.

That’s why the Estée Lauder eye pencil really does add to my life. It gives me time. It goes on rich and easy and smooth, dark and properly pigmented. But it smudges into soft smokiness with just a  touch of the smudging end of the pencil or a soft round eyeshadow brush. It’s good alone with a little pale base or it smokes up into other colours. Its texture is so easy to apply yet enduring. Quite simply the best eye pencil in the world.

While I was at the Estée Lauder counter I also tried their powder eye shadow in gold. Again I’m no stranger to a gold eye palette. I love the way it picks up the blue in my eyes if it’s the right gold, and this is. Not too brassy, rosy or orange gold it has the perfect shimmer and is long lasting and soft textured.

Estée Lauder has not been a brand that I’m automatically drawn to because I thought it was a little bit frumpy, but only because I didn’t look properly.

I first came across this pencil in Las Vegas Airport when I realised I’d left my entire make-up bag at home and was going straight from the plane to interview Celine Dion. The choice at the airport was limited but it made me look harder and at everything in a new light.
