Self Tanning

Prepare your body for baring with our edit of the most flawless and foolproof fake tans around.

He-Shi Express Liquid Tan £17.85 at Feel Unique. One of the most simple, easy-to-use formulas on the market, the He-Shi liquid doesn’t require excessive buffing as it spreads and blends evenly. With a golden brown, fast-drying trace colour and minimal DHA scent, this is perfect for last-minute tanning. A couple of drops onto a tanning mitt swiped over limbs will leave you with a gorgeous gleaming tan that will develop over a couple of hours without a streak in sight.

Fake Bake Gold Self Tanning Lotion £30.75 at HQHair.com. Not quite liquid, not quite cream, this luxurious lotion formula is packed full of antioxidant-rich pomegranate and green tea extracts that protects and softens the skin whilst the tan develops. With a guide colour that applies close to the developed end shade, skin is imparted with an instant deep, natural honeyed glow.

St Tropez Dark Bronzing Mousse £32.99 at Boots. As one of the original faux-tanners, St Tropez has amassed a cult following over the years. St Tropez Dark is the newest launch from the brand and offers the deepest, darkest and  most golden tan yet, although as the formula contains allo-melanin – which is designed to mimic the natural melanin in the skin – your tan tone will never be unnaturally dark. Word of warning however, as this is one self-tanner that should only be applied before bed due to the green-black tinged guide colour.

James Read Liquid Tan from £18.50 at Harvey Nichols. With an internationally renowned reputation as the ‘Tan King’, we were expecting nothing less than perfection from James Read’s first foray into the tanning market. And that’s exactly what he’s delivered. The packaging is all 70s luxe, with art-deco styled gold and white stripes. The range, which includes 11 fragrance-free gradual, liquid and wash-off tans, face tanners and a foolproof BB tanning pen, combines a subtle golden-brown guide colour with an easily-blendable formula for streak-free bronzed perfection, no matter your skin tone.

Vita Liberata pHenomenal Tan Mousse £37.50 at Cult Beauty. The original Vita Liberata tan has had a high-science update. With a special patent-pending combination of naturally nourishing extracts and pHenO2 technology, this is the longest-lasting fake tan on the market. Offering all of the streak and fragrance free benefits of the original mousse, pHenomenal holds strong to skin, lasting for up to 3 weeks and fading gradually, and most importantly, evenly.

Sisley Self Tanning Gel £78 at Selfridges. I have yet to find a facial tanner that bronzes skin quite as flawlessly and seamlessly as Sisley’s. Boasting a formula that hydrates and offers free radical protection, it also subtly imparts a beautifully bronzed tone to skin. Although not cheap, only a tiny pea-sized amount of the light, oil-free gel texture is required for a glowing golden skin.
