Home hair colour kits are flying off the shelves as we all look to save money on our hair routines. Even those who can’t bear to be parted from their salon altogether are finding they can save a fortune by using a home kit in-between treatments. But what to the cost to our bathrooms with the mess and stains… not to mention the time spent begging your friends to help out?!

If you don’t have a sympathetic friend and endless supply of clean towels, foam hair colour may be just thing thing you need! I am a veteran of home hair colour kits, from bright colours as a student to the constant battle with grey which started in my mid-twenties (life is SO unfair). I have done some serious damage to work surfaces, floors, towels and tile-grouting, let alone my hair, but that’s another story entirely.

So creating a hair colour that doesn’t run or drip, can be used by you alone and gets pretty good colour coverage has got to be a winner in my book! Hence I grabbed a bottle of John Frieda Precision Foam Colour stat and got to work.

So was it as easy as it said on the package? Yes – you mix as usual but don’t shake (a gentle tilt is all it takes) and with the addition of a specially devised screw-on top your mousse is ready to work it’s magic. I found it easy to cover my unruly mop of curly hair and there was enough to cover all of it with just the one box. You simply massage it in and leave for half an hour. No drips and I gingerly allowed myself to wander around with it on – a first I can tell you.

And the colour? Pretty good, overall. I used Brilliant Brunette Deep Brown-Black so can’t really say how the blonde colours would perform, but I have to say the colour was rich and the grey covered and where it had touched my skin it was easily removed.

This hair colour isn’t cheap and at £9.99 it’s the most expensive off the shelf but it was easy to use, effective and plentiful.
