Hot Hot Holiday Makeup

Make up purchases are never quite as fabulous, frivolous and damn right hot as they are in summer. All those bright-as-you-like shades that come into their own against freshly tanned skin, lightened hair and wide eyes. The super sheer gleaming textures that melt into skin, creating hyper-real textures and porelessness. And then there’s the metallics. Bronze, gold, shimmering pearl; liquid, lucid and feature-highlighting.

And herein lies the conundrum with summer make up, it’s not so much in knowing what to buy, but in knowing what to take when you jet off in search of the sun.

Here’s our edit of this season’s best. . . you never know, this year a capsule make up wardrobe might be yours.

Mac Cosmetics Powder Blush in Hot Nights, £18 The name of MAC’s must-have summer blush, from the Temperature Rising collection, pretty much says it all. Hot Nights. Or at least it sets the scene; it’s the height of summer, your still-warm skin’s a newly glistening shade of tan, the sun may have set but there’s still a heady warmth, and now is the perfect time (and place) to impart a healthy, magenta flush to cheeks. Sweep below the cheekbones, blend and sizzle.

Tom Ford Illuminating Cheek Colour in Bronze Amber, £48 Just a daub of this gilded cheek colour will have your cheekbones, collarbones and limbs glistening as though you have just emerged from beneath the sun-speckled Mediterranean waters. This is pure molten bronze without any of the is-she-wearing-glitter worry.

YSL Baby Doll Mascara, £24.50 Selfridges.comA lash lengthening, volumising and plumping mascara, preferably in a non-black shade, is all you need to frame your eyes and offset a tan. Forget slipping, sliding, melting eyeliners or, worse, kohls and instead stick to an impact-full lash. We love YSL’s Baby Doll Mascara in plum (for green eyes) and khaki (for brown and blue eyes).

Stila Convertible Colour Trio, £22, caramel, skin-mimicking shades of neutral are the go-to hues come summer. It’s all about pulling the creamy, glossy natural tones from skin and highlighting them. Stila’s Convertible Colour Trio, in the honeyed shades Gerbera, Camellia and Honeysuckle enable you to do this perfectly, for lips, lids and cheeks.

Soap & Glory Sexy Mother Pucker 3D Volume Lip Shine Crayon in Fuchsia-Ristic, £8 Boots.comIf nothing else, a colour-wrapped lip is essential for a hazy summer evening. Forego fussy matte lipsticks and, if there’s a chance of a salty sea-breeze, tacky glosses and plump, quite literally for Soap & Glory’s Lip Shine Crayons. The chunky crayon is a doddle to apply (no reflection necessary) whilst the pigments are collagen and colour saturated to give you a hydrated, sheeny and plumped up lip in an instant.

Bobbi Brown All Over Bronzing Gel SPF15, £22’s little more frustrating on a searing summer holiday – in a beauty sense at least – than those first few days. Your tan hasn’t quite taken. Your skin has not quite acclimatised and your hair is still very much battling against the salty, surfer girl look. Which is why you need this little black bottle, stat. Delivering a super natural sun kissed look in a matter of seconds, the gel formula blends into skin flawlessly, creating a healthy, day 5 tan without excessive blending, layering or sun-worshipping.

Cover FX Bronzer in Sunset, £25 definition, warmth and depth to your gently sun-touched skin with Cover FX’s skin-adaptive bronzer compact. Fully matte, finely milled and packed full of skin-benefitting ingredients – including Vegesome Moist 24, Green Tea Extract and Vitamins C, E and F for boosted hydration and active antioxidant protection, it’s the ultimate skin-boosting tan enhancer.
