Anne Hathaway in Rio

You’ve done a little voice work before, on the movie Hoodwinked! and on The Simpsons – how do you find the experience?

Anne: I found working on Rio very challenging. I think in a live action film, collaboration usually feels much bigger, but as I got more used to the process I realized the collaboration was really between Carlos and me. Once I understood that, I felt very comfortable, but I don’t think we used any of the recordings from the first few sessions. I really had to learn how to infuse more energy into my voice in order to make it more expressive. Normally you’re into the character, you’re in her body language, into her facial expressions, you create her with your eyes as well, and with Jewel you show up and the only thing you have to work with is your voice. So it took a little while to find it.

How did you enjoy seeing the finished result?

Anne: It’s funny – I don’t like watching myself as me, as in a live action movie, so it actually gives me a chance to watch my own work, and more importantly get to watch the work of others.

You get to sing on film for the first time – was it something you always wanted to do?

Anne: Carlos can get me to do anything. Every time I would come, he would show me more footage and it was just breathtaking. It really was. So then when he says, ‘So now can you sing?’ you can’t say anything but yes.

How did you enjoy it?

Anne: Well, it is intimidating to sing in front of Sergio and, as I’m sure you can imagine. That morning I had an extra cup of coffee to steel my nerves. But singing has always been something that I’ve loved to do. I never thought about doing it professionally because I always felt more drawn to acting, but who knows? I mean, I’m doing things that I never, ever, ever thought I would do in front of a lot of people as well, so anything is possible.

Jewel in the movie plays extraordinarily hard to get – would you recommend that as a way for birds to get a guy?

Anne: I am a girl without game. I’m not interested in games. I think if you are someone who playing hard to get comes naturally to, go with it. For me, I’m a ‘wear my heart on my sleeve, fall in love at first sight and go with it’ sort of girl. For me it’s all about having fun with someone and learning how to communicate in a way that you enjoy.

Rio is out in the UK in 3D on 8th April.
