Lara McGillivray is the lucky winner of the Revlon’s Ultimate Liquid Online Beauty Reviewer Competition. When we read her interview we were inspired so we thought you should read it too. With her first blog post already published, she talks to us about her hopes for the future.
Where are you from?
I was born in Zimbabwe, where my family are from, before moving to England, then India, South Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Australia, since graduating from university I now live in West Sussex, one of my childhood homes.

Anything interesting about you…pets, hobbies, holidays, habits?
I have a degree in International Relations. I have performed in the Vagina Monologues. Twice. I have a, some would say, unhealthy addiction to chilli flavoured rice cakes. I will challenge anyone to Mariokart. I have an unearthly fear of snakes. If given the chance I would gladly give up a year of my life to follow the Formula 1 circuit around the world. I practise walking in high heels every chance I get and have never owned a pair of shoes that didn’t hurt me (not pretty ones anyway). I used to be an Izzy but am now definitely a Meredith. I apparently can’t answer a question simply and sometimes have issues with the concept of ‘Too Much Information’.

How did you hear about the competition?
Is it awful that I can’t remember? Put it this way- I don’t remember what I was doing or looking at at the time but I do clearly remember seeing this little pop-up and thinking “That looks fun. Maybe I should enter.” And like Alice down the rabbit hole…

What made you enter?
I entered because I enjoy writing and I enjoy playing with make-up. It was always going to be win-win even if I lost. If you know what I mean.

How did you get your inspiration for the review?
I honestly took inspiration from the product. Once I decided on Top Tomato and tried it out, I knew that I couldn’t spend the day cleaning or doing laundry. Not that that would ever be my first choice. There is something so sexy and so glamorous about red lipstick that you feel somehow transformed just by wearing it. I obviously wanted to put it through the normal tests of eating, drinking, talking, kissing… All things that I am a big fan of! I just had so much fun doing it and I hope that came across in the review.

Are you currently a writer and what do you write for?
Ooh… Am I writer if I don’t get paid for it? I would say that I have always been a writer- When I was 8 and in primary school, I was asked to write a 1-2 page story to which my response was to compose an adventure epic that ran to 35 pages. So, to answer your question, no I don’t currently write for any publication (In fact, just a few weeks ago I was preparing to start law school!) but I do love writing and it still surprises me that it took me so long to realise that this is exactly what I want to do.

How do you hope this will help you going forward?
Revlon is such a huge and well-respected brand and Beauty and the Dirt is such an amazing and popular site that to be given the opportunity to write for and be published by them is simply incredible. Not only is this a huge confidence boost and the sign that I needed to reassure me that I am headed in the right direction, but it is a fantastic chance to gain journalistic experience and get my writing out there.

What’s your career inspiration and dreams?
I have realised recently that it is just impossible to predict the path that your life might take but at the moment I am completely focused on building a career in magazine journalism. I love fashion and beauty but I am also really interested in current events, world cultures and society. My goal is to one day be in a position to write articles about all these things and the many, many more that are endlessly grabbing my attention.
