While I’m no stranger to facials, I can’t say I’ve ever fallen asleep during one – until now. The facial in question took place within the luxurious surroundings of the Jurlique Health and Wellness Spa on Chiswick High Road in West London. I’ve always sworn by Jurlique’s organic, hi-tech beauty products so when I was given the opportunity to check out what their spa had to offer, I jumped at the chance.

Despite the spa’s location on the bustling Chiswick High Road, the spa itself is deceptively spacious and incorporates six treatments rooms, a large waiting area and even a dispensary  – the spa also accommodates a naturopathy health and wellness clinic. First impressions were good – the staff were friendly and helpful – although I can’t say I shared the receptionist’s taste in music – Enigma’s Return to Innocence. Please. While there may indeed be a few people who still love that track (I’m embarrassed to say I actually purchased it back in 1994) it’s a sad fact that too many spas think this track – or any track that sounds remotely tribal/aboriginal/African – provides the perfect soundtrack for a massage.

Anyway, it wasn’t long before I was introduced to my therapist, the marvellous Magdalena, and shown to a dimly lit treatment room. The rooms are certainly some of the largest treatment rooms I’ve seen, with soft, flattering lighting and some of the most comfortable spa beds I’ve come across – hence the momentary lapse in consciousness.

After a thorough examination of my face, Magdalena informed me that although my skin was in reasonably good condition, there was evidence of slight sun damage (I cycle everywhere) and my pores were somewhat clogged. The Purely Age Defying Facial sounded like the perfect solution – although I’ve only just turned thirty, don’t smoke and rarely venture outside with my SPF 30, too much time spent in front of a computer and overexposure to sun has left me with a dull complexion and skin prone to dry patches, which is never a good thing when it comes to fighting off those pesky wrinkles.

The treatment started with a heavenly massage, which worked wonders for my tired, knotted limbs and aching shoulders. Magdalena then thoroughly cleansed my skin with a rosewood and lavender infused balancing cleanser, before using a rosewater mist to hydrate and tone. Jurlique’s Purely Age-Defying Day Cream was then applied – with SPF 15 and a potent blend of organic herbs, this gorgeous moisturiser works wonders on dull complexions while also helping to reduce discolouration caused by sun damage. An exfoliating cream was then used to lift away dead skin cells and boost radiance, before Jurlique’s Purifying Facial Mask was applied. My skin felt instantly clearer and a week later still looked healthy, clear and line-free.

I’ve always loved the smell of Jurlique’s products and the gorgeous fragrances mean that, even if you’re only booked in for a facial, you’ll come away relaxed, rejuvenated and glowing with health. Facials start at the seriously impressive price of £37.25, which, for a London spa, certainly comes as a breath of fresh air. The spa offers a wide range of treatments from facials and full body massages to hydrotherapy treatments and Vitamin & Mineral Deficiency screening.
