For years now we have come to rely on MAC for their vibrant and extensive range of products. From show stopping shadows to lushious lipsticks and glosses, if it’s intense colour you’re after there really is no other brand. So it’s no surprise that for the third year in a row MAC are the official partners with the extraordinary Cirque du Soleil. Producing quite literally show stopping looks, the crazy, quirky and mesmerizing make-up only adds to the mystique of the show. Head Make-up Designer, Nathalie Gagné is responsible for all the development of the characters looks (and boy did she have a job on her hands) she said: “I have enjoyed working to develop stage products that have been worn by the most amazing artists in the world.”

It’s not just as easy as a dab of gloss there and a sweep of shadow here, oh no these products have to have staying power. When watching the show it’s clear just how much effort goes into these looks, with facial shading and highlighting, it shows just what MAC can do.

We caught up with Nathalie to find out how she created the looks. For the Arieal Hoops atrists  she said: ”the make up is in some way aimed at showing the transition between the world of childhood and adolescence, the tear that can take place in the body and the rebellion. For this reason, I used red for the eyes as tears of blood. The MAC star product for the eyes would be the MAC BlackTrack Fluidline due to its intensity and its staying power when the artist is sweating.” When asked about how she created the look for Boum Boum she said: “Boum Boum is one of my favourite characters, the inspiration being of Jack in The Nightmare before Christmas, by Tim Burton. He has to look menacing, or has to seem like he thinks he is, for nobody really believes him: his soul is sweet, and his heart is tender. Big mouth and big eyes like a pumpkin: the star product would be the MAC Paint Stick in Basic Red.”

It puts our half hour make-up regime to shame, although if we walked out the house with the type of make-up on that the Cirque performers wear we have no doubt we would raise a few eyebrows. Looks like Cirque du Soleil have found their match in MAC and visa versa. We thoroughly recommend you watch Quidam (the Cirque du Soleil show currently over here in London) and if you can take your eyes off the crazy contortionists for just one second, check out the make-up, it’s not to be missed.
