The Tempest

The Tempest

On a slightly different note, our next film recommendation for this week is big screen adaptation of Shakepeare’s The Tempest.

In Julie Taymor’s version of ‘The Tempest,’ the main character is now a woman named Prospera. Going back to the 16th or 17th century, women practicing the magical arts of alchemy were often convicted of witchcraft. In Taymor’s version, Prospera is usurped by her brother and sent off with her four-year daughter on a ship. She ends up on an island; it’s a tabula rasa: no society, so the mother figure becomes a father figure to Miranda. This leads to the power struggle and balance between Caliban and Prospera; a struggle not about brawn, but about intellect.

As Prospera breaks her magical staff against an entrancing volcanic landscape at the end of her heroic quest, this poignant story of love and forgiveness translates into a riveting and filmic mystical tale, for our own times.

Starring Helen Mirren, Russell Brand, Felicity Jones and Alan Cumming, this is definitely one hard core cast worth waiting for…

And lastly for the lighted-hearted of us out there, we have Rango.

With a cast full of talent, Johnny DeppIsla Fisher,Abigail BreslinNed Beatty, and Alfred Molina, this anticipated animation follows the comical, life altering journey that helps Rango finally find a place where he doesn’t blend in, pretty difficult for a chameleon.

Aspiring to be a swashbuckling hero, he accidently winds up in aWestern town plagued by bandits and he is forced to literally play the role in order to protect it. Welcomed as the last hope the town has been waiting for, new Sheriff Rango is forced to play his new role to the hilt…until, in a blaze of action-packed situations and encounters with outrageous characters, Rango starts to become the hero he once only pretended to be.

Definitely one for the inner-child… or to tame any noisy youngsters this weekend!
