New Nude Nails

After multiple seasons of nail art that has ranged from the subtle and sparkly to the outlandishly weird, wonderful and, quite frankly, terrifying – yes we’re looking to you Mugler AW12 and your thorny metal finger adornments, manicurists are taking a more pared-back approach to spring summer 2013 nails.

There is nothing quite like the understated chic that a creamy, glossy flesh-toned shade, immaculately painted over short, round nails, can impart.

Not as provocative as a scarlet red, nor as statement as the trend-led tones worn by the fashion pack, a fresh, nude and natural tip not only takes us back to beauty basics and is the perfect finger-lengthening pairing for a lighter, brighter new season wardrobe, but a fresh and pristine manicure subtly hints at a hushed level of high maintenance.

Pink tones, glossy finishes and luxe, milky textures were spotted everywhere from Diane von Furstenberg and Carolina Herrera to Alexander Wang, Tibi and Donna Karan.

To choose the most flattering barely-there shade try holding a selection of polishes against the back of your hand and pick the one that ‘pops’ against your skin tone. We’ll be choosing our shade for the season from the French Nudes Collection that Tom Pecheux has created  for Estee Lauder. Offering five immaculate, foundation-for-nails polishes, ranging from fair to dark and warm to cool, there is a high-gloss shade to suit all skin tones. “Enhancing the nails rather than making a big statement with colour,” the collection features a creamy cocoa, milky beige, soft pink, warm chocolate brown and a buffed cream shade.

This is the new modern manicure, nailed. If you can choose just one that is.
