There’s a fine line between following a make-up trend and looking like you’re trying a bit too hard. In this case, the fine line is a carefully-applied smudge of kohl pencil. And the trend is a pared-down, goth-but-glam look, inspired by our current love affair with all things vampire related.

Yes, it’s true – thanks to the likes of Twilight and True Blood, it’s now cool to look a bit on the pasty side. Think Kristen Stewart, Emma Watson, the Olsen sisters, Alexa Chung… Make-up wise, we’re talking messed-up glamour with a rocky edge. And frankly, we’re loving it.

Bobbi Brown’s Tinted Moisturizing Balm

So how to get that I-only-come-out-at-night look? It’s not as simple as just sleeping in your make-up – but the good news is you don’t need to bother with the fake tan any more. Pale is interesting again, although you need to make sure your skin still glows or you’ll just end up looking grungy. Make sure you’ve moisturised well, then try Perricone MD’s new No Foundation Foundation (£41) or Bobbi Brown’s Extra SPF25 Tinted Moisturizing Balm (£31.50) to get a naturally flawless look.

Clinique’s Plum Seduction

Once you’ve sorted your complexion, it’s all about eyes. Remember, we’re not talking full-blown goth here, so step away from the black eye-shadow and go for soft metallics in pewter and violet shades – artfully applied to give a look that says ‘immortal’ rather than ‘undead’. Clinique’s Colour Surge Eye Shadow Quad in Plum Seduction (£22) has four shades so you can get darker and more mysterious as the day goes on. The Body Shop’s new Metallic Eye Definers (£6 each) glide on smoothly and are perfect for a sexy flick. And you can forget your natural-look mascara – finish off with a coat or two of something dramatic instead, like YSL’s Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils, £18.

With eyes this smoky, stick to a natural look on your lips or you’ll end up looking more Marilyn Manson than Evan Rachel Wood. Nothing says Nosferatu like a subtly stained pout – get the look with Laura Mercier’s Lip Stain in Mulberry (£16), or By Terry’s Laque de Rose in Rose Canaille (£25.45). Then mess up your hair a bit (you sleep in a coffin, remember) and you’re good to go. Just don’t have any garlic bread with your pizza…
