If any of you are as interested in the upcoming Tim Burton version of Alice in Wonderland as I am, you might be wondering who exactly is that girl playing Alice. We have all seen the pictures, but nobody seems to know exactly who this young, innocent looking girl is. Well, I am here to tell you all about Mia Wasikowska (that’s vah-shee-kov-ska) and how she landed the role of a lifetime.
Raised in Australia and trained as a ballerina, she wanted to branch out and do something that involved less perfection. That is why she chose acting. She had many small roles as a young teen, but her first big role came in the American HBO drama In Treatment, where she played a teen that attempted suicide. Wasikowska was highly praised for her American accent in the show, to which she responded that because of all the American films she watched as a kid, it wasn’t difficult to pick up. She then had a role in Defiance with Daniel Craig and in Amelia alongside Hilary Swank.
Her biggest role to date is playing none other than Alice herself in the Tim Burton revival of the Lewis Carroll novel. She beat out many actresses for the role, including Anne Hathaway, who had been the actress that the writers originally intended on having. Hathaway obviously turned down the role, but requested to be cast as the White Queen instead. This gave Wasikowska the chance to take on the role of the all-grown-up Alice, and make the character her own. While we think she has the look down, we can’t wait to see how she does in the rest of the film!
