Refocus Fitness Instructors... and the view!

Refocus Fitness Instructors... and the view!

That Christmas weight is still not shifting and you fancy a trip out of the city, then Lauren Spearman found a fab fat fighting boot camp that may just be the answers to your prayers!

Summer…it seems so far away but the shops are already stacked with floral dresses and sandals and there’s a growing number of sunglasses getting their first outing of the year.

Before we know it our summer holidays will be booked and we’ll be jetting off to sunnier climes to bronze our pasty skin and relax on the beach with a Pina Colada or four.

However, with my Christmas weight still a firm friend I’m definitely not beach ready and now is the time to start the summer regime (depressing, yes, but it’ll come around quickly).

With that in mind I travelled to Swansea to try out Refocus Fitness, a luxury boot camp, to give me the kick start I need.

Now my idea of luxury does not in any way involve the words ‘boot’ and ‘camp’ so I wasn’t sure what to expect. To me ‘boot camp’ conjures up the image of ex-Army officers shouting in your face, cold metal bunk beds and plenty of tears.

Refocus Fitness couldn’t be more opposite. Based on the Gower Peninsula (www.visitswanseabay.com), this boot camp really was luxury. Guests stay in 5* cottages with their own rooms, en-suites along with a kitchen and lounge area. Oh and anywhere that has heated flooring for those extremely cold and early winter mornings is a winner for me.

After settling in we were introduced to the team of instructors who took our measurements (the worst bit of the weekend!), and then explained to us what the weekend would entail.

Early nights, ever earlier mornings and hours upon hours of exercise – this couldn’t be more far removed from my usual weekends.

They explained the aim of their boot camps weren’t the usual military style with meagre food portions and being punished if you couldn’t keep up. The focus is as much on nutrition and how to incorporate this into your ‘real life’ as it is about the exercise.

Lots of people come as groups of friends or couples and although I went alone I was always made to feel part of the team and we were encouraged to work as a group in certain exercise tasks.

Throughout the weekend we were definitely put through our paces, a couple of hours before breakfast I would normally imagine to be torture but the variety of the tasks (circuits, boxing work, running) along with the encouragement you get from the team is really motivational.

The setting also really helps. It is truly stunning, Three Cliffs Bay in particular was once voted ‘Britain’s Best View’, so when I felt myself flagging at the back of the group I just had to have a good look around me, soak up the clean air and keep on going.

The boot camp is aimed as a kick start or boost to your usual exercise regime and it popular amongst brides-to-be, where Refocus regularly run ‘bridal boot camps’ – marrying pre-wedding fitness plans, girlie weekends and wedding planning all into one trip.

I’ve always been sceptical as to whether a couple of days out of your day to day life would really make a difference but the talk team you through how you can use the exercises learnt and apply them to your day to day life so now I can go into the gym with a plan specifically tailored for me along with recipe ideas and support from the team should I need it.

For anyone who wants to try a boot camp but doesn’t want a weekend of torture I can’t recommend Refocus Fitness enough. It really does incorporate luxury with positive motivation, great surroundings, beautiful food…and if that isn’t enough to the instructors are not only extremely professional and knowledgeable they’re rather easy on the eye too.
