Use it. Wear it. Love it.

So said Revlon and so I duly did. As a satisfied customer in the past I had no reason to doubt the brand and yet…  12 hour durability? “The touch up is now history”? Sure-  said my inner rationalist-we can put a man on the moon, we can send messages around the world in the blink of an eye, we can even learn who’s dating who, who’s wearing what, who said THAT in the prolific online world of celebrity oversharing at the click of a button. But it seems that some things are simply out of our reach, mythical even. Things like unicorns, or pain-free stilettos, or- dare I say it- a 12 hour lipstick?? What little girl doesn’t grow up with THOSE stories of hope and a perfect world?

So, setting aside my doubts long enough to pick a colour (no quick process with 20 beautiful shades), I was reminded of a pearl of wisdom passed down to us by Gwyneth Paltrow who philosophically proclaimed that “beauty is a kick-ass red lipstick“. Top Tomato it had to be. In 12 hours I would find out if it was kick-ass.

It didn’t take me nearly that long to find out that Revlon’s Liquid Lipstick is in fact well designed and easy to apply. No more broken or unevenly worn down lipsticks for us modern women. It provides the perfect balance of two elusive concepts; a moisturising lipstick and a lustrous lip-gloss that left my lips feeling velvety rather than sticky (and any woman with longer than chin length hair on a windy day will immediately recognise the value of that).

Now for the test of time…

But I’m a busy woman, I can’t just sit around looking pretty- I have places to go, people to see, lunches to eat, cocktails to drink… my lips are going to be very busy today. Not to mention tonight. Top Tomato is going to have to earn its keep and, although exceptionally reasonably priced, a smart girl will always get her money’s worth. And so began a day that elicited more than a few compliments (and even a Scarlett Johansson comparison). Much girl talk, one Caesar salad, a cream tea, and a (few) French martinis later, I have to tell you that my lipstick was still exactly where it should be. And without so much as a top coat? It had one final test to pass before I would allow my excitement to get the better of me and declare it a success. For this I needed a man… hmmm, the sexy bartender who had provided the ScarJo reference would do. And after my lips performed their final task the mirror behind the bar presented proof that not even a kiss had diminished the vibrant shade (although I now had rather more colour in the rest of my face). But, being a true scientist, I just had to give it one more try. As the irrepressible Mae West once said, “I’ll try anything once, twice if I like it, three times to make sure.”

And that is exactly what I will be doing when I go back to the store tomorrow and buy a few more shades. After all, unicorns and pain-free stilettos may not come around everyday, so, for those hopeful little girls inside us, this may be as close as it gets to a perfect world.
