S5 Organic Cosmeceuticals

We sat down with Laura Rudoe, founder of S5 skincare to discuss the interesting story behind her new unique organic cosmecuetical line.
The idea behind S5 began with Laura’s personal skin care experiences from when she was younger. Laura looked for products that would work for her young skin that was prone to acne. She found that because her skin was so sensitive, she needed to avoid harsh chemicals and use more natural products. However, for problematic skin, the label ‘natural’ on products just wasn’t enough.
“We wanted to focus on affordable organic products, treatment products,” Laura said. “We wanted to create really effective treatment products for a number of different skin problems.”
Through extensive research, Laura and her team discovered the root cause of skin concerns was skin stress, of which irritation and inflammation were the largest contributors.
“Premature aging, hyperpigmentation, acne, redness, dryness, all comes from inflammation of the skin,” Laura said. “If your skin is getting red and inflamed, for whatever the reason, it breaks down the collagen in your skin, causing premature aging.”
Laura explained that most skincare products are filled with ingredients that can irritate, dehydrate or suffocate the skin, which can reverse the effects of any good ingredients. Tired of testing an assortment of failing sproducts, she decided to develop S5, which is the first organic cosmeceutical range that is also targeting women who are looking for results in an anti-ageing skincare line.
Laura and her team ventured the four corners of the globe looking for all natural ingredients that performed as well as synthetic ingredients found in ordinary cosmeceuticals. They found that ingredients from plants who had to thrive in extreme conditions were proven to deliver superior results.
“All ingredients come from different areas of the world and the plants have to work really hard to adapt to their surroundings to stay youthful and healthy and well as survive,” Laura said. “We have taken an extreme naturals perspective for the S5 line.”
The ingredients for S5 come from five extreme areas of the world: The Arctic, Antarctic, the Alpes, Chilean Andes and Tibet.
The concept behind using ingredients from these five extreme areas is scientifically driven.
“The idea is that plants from the Rainforest have to deal with bacteria in their environment, so those naturals would work best for blemish prone skin,” Laura said. “In the desert, for example, plants learn to adapt to dry conditions. It is important to maintain the integrity of the cell membrane, which can get dry and damaged, which is why naturals from the desert work best for those who suffer from dry skin.”
The team’s aim is simply to find the best naturals from around the globe and make quality products that will help improve the quality of skin.
“I have been to these areas before and have seen in practice what these products can do to adapt in their surroundings,” Laura said. “We want integrity that goes all the way through. All the products are hypoallergenic and natural.”
The S5 range of five-targeted serums has been engineered to tackle skin conditions associated with skin stress and the related premature aging they cause such as dryness, blemishes, redness and sensitivity.
“The five prescriptive serums in the skin care line can be blended or layered to suit whatever skin concerns a person is experiencing,” Laura said.
Hypoallergenic cleansers and treatment led moisturizers work with the serums to maximize superior results.
The texture of the serums and moisturisers is quite unique, I have started using them already and I really like the feel of them on my skin. Waiting to see the results, so I will keep you posted on those.
Selfridges, London has been announced as the exclusive in store retailer in the UK for the S5 skincare line, and is set to launch on the 15th of September. You can also pre-order it online right now at http://www.s5skincare.com/

I like the look of these products. However, I am wondering how organic they are?
I visited the S5 web-site and looked at the ingredients for the serums. In four out of five serums, the only organic ingredient in the product is Aloe Vera, and this ingredient is 95% water!
In organic products most if not all ingredients must be organic? To have just one ingredient organic looks bad to me, like green-washing.
I am intrigued by the the extreme environments concept of the ingredients, this sounds interesting.

Lovely and fabulous product! I had the opportunity to have tried the S5 renew serum / ageing skin ( I am not that old!) thanks to my friend Violaine Bargues … but never got a chance to fill in the questionnaire which went along with the product when I received it. I tried it and noticed the difference in my skin, especially at this time of year ( September/October) when most of the time, our skin reflects the “after-summer holidays” and “start of Autumn” changes . As far I am concerned, i have noticed less redness in my upper cheek ( especially after the sunshine in the summer at the seaside, sailing, windy conditions) and some more “light” brought in my skin. i still haven’t applied some foundation at this time of the month whereas last year I did ! Thank you for providing some samples and more feedbacks on how well your range of products are successful! Good luck! If you need some help professionally wise ( telemarketing, sales etc), I am more than happy to help out if a position arises! Thank you. Marie

Thank you so much Marie-Francoise for your lovely feedback on the S5 range! We know the products work but it’s so nice to hear it directly from the potential customers! As a clarification for Rosalie, and anyone interested in organic cosmetic products, I wanted to give a bit more information on how products are made. All cosmetics serums and creams are made from between 60 and 80% of water, leaving 20 to 40% for the “Active Ingredients” – oils obviously are different with no water at all. With S5 we have decided to use organic Aloe Vera instead of just plain old water. For the remaining of the actives, we have only used 100% natural ingredients – and as many organic ones as was humanely possible: Alpine Bioactives, Rainforest Bioactives, Argan Oil, Pomegranate Oil, Rosehip Oil, Swiss alpine plants, Sea Buckthron, Sunflower Oil, Inca Inchi Oil etc… Our products are on average 99.5 natural, leaving a small 0.5% for the mandatory preservative (we have used a safe preservative, no Parabens or Phenoxyethanol) – the 2 oil based products are 100% natural. I hope you all enjoy using S5 as much as we do and see a clear difference and improvement to you skin. I am available for comments or advice for anyone needing more information.

Dirty Boys Soap CoOp, a local soap making CoOp sratted by some of my buddies here in Kalamazoo. Sure you can’t just buy their soap in any store, but restructuring society into a more sustainable model is all about reconnecting communities and producing things for ourselves, and not relying on some bath company half way across the country to ship organic soap to us.

lolol! I’m not going to lie, it tempts me to bcmeoe one also! It can get pricey that’s why it’s best to wait and only purchase when you are FULLY ready to get a product. Sorry to hear the L’oreal UV Tint turned out to not be cosmetically elegant =( That happens all the time when shopping for sunscreens which is why I have given up on most conventional ones and just go for ones designed for humid weather like Biore UV Perfect Face Milk =)You can cleanse more than twice a day. I usually don’t recommend it since it can cause overdrying and it really messes up the moisture barrier function of the skin which is what BALANCES out everything (sebum secretion etc.) but moisturizing afterwards really does help. I used to cleanse 3 times a day when I used to run (I used to run all the time in marathons) because of the sweat. Now not so much because I don’t need to. But if you find your skin becoming too greasy or whatever, then do what you need to even if that means cleansing more than twice a day.<33333
