SS14 Trends: Hot Lips

It might be rather chilly outside. It might still technically be winter. But January’s over, so our sights are firmly set on Spring! We’re kicking things off by trying out a SS14 beauty trend that is sure to pop some life and summer sass right back into any outfit you’re layering up this season. Hot lips are  a trend that stormed the runways of DSQUARED2 and DKNY during the SS14 summer shows, and its wearable nature is sure to make it a must-have look come spring.

The tangerine lip look at DSQUARED2 SS14 was created by MAC using Pro Longwear Lip Pencil in What A Blast! (£14.50) to define and contour lips, together with the MAC Lipstick in Morange (£15.00). The MAC team under the watchful eye of Charlotte Tilburry overdrew the natural outline of each model’s lips, making them fuller at the outer corners. With such a bold colour, act with caution. Play it safe by sticking to your natural lip line, and if you are tempted to mimic the DSQUARED2 look, remember that less is most definitely more. Do not get carried away.

The key to the hot lips look is toning down the rest of your makeup to make way for your statement lip colour.  The MAC team at DSQUARED2 SS14 used MAC Studio Fix SPF15 (£24.50) together with Pearl Cream Colour Base (£15.00) patted on to the upper cheekbones with fingertips to highlight the complexion. Keep everything very neutral. Opt for a very light bronzer to give skin some warmth, and if you are craving blusher, remember your go-to colour could easily clash. Instead use your chosen bold lip shade and dot lightly to cheeks before blending to a subtle sheen.

Keep eyes very neutral and under-played. Banish smokey eyes for the day. Make like Charlotte Tilbury’s team and opt for a neutral brown, applying to the roots of upper lashes to thicken and define without creating a look that’s too overpowering.

The beauty industry has of course pre-empted this sunny trend with a host of new lip colours to meet our every hot-lips need. Here are a few of the best fruity shades that are ripe for the picking this season.

MAC Lipstick in Morange (£15.00), NEW Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick in Defiant Coral (£24.00), Tom Ford Lip Colour in Wild Ginger (£36.00), NEW Chanel Rouge Allure Luminous Intense Lip Colour in Exentrique (£25.00).
