Tanning 101 from James Read

When applying your self-tan, it’s really important to pick the right product that matches your hair colour as well as your skin tone. You want to keep it looking as real as possible so I’ve done a quick tanning 101 for three hair shades; Fair, Blonde and Dark.
Check out my top tips below:
Fair Hair
This Autumn/Winter season is all about the Off White Tan which is great for someone with fair hair – think Emma Watson, who’s skin recently looks glowing.
Go for a gradual tan which is light on the skin, only use over 2 days, don’t use anymore otherwise you will get build up on the skin. Go for Sienna X extend and perfect gradual tan, this will give your skin a natural glow. I would recommend using a different product on the face – go for Chanel Soleil Identit perfect colour face self tanner. Before you apply tan to the face rub an ice cube over the face first to seal the pores and after 4 days, exfoliate to help your tan fade evenly and get your skin ready for when you need to reapply your tan.
Tanning for fair hair
Blonde Hair
With blonde hair you want the skin to have a golden and luxury look to it. Think Farrah Fawcett in that red swim suit, wet dewy looking skin and you are on the right track. For this hair tone which is a medium skintone go for a bronzing spray (Vani-T Bronzed Goddess is great), Mousse (St Tropez Bronzing mousse) or a liquid tan (He-Shi Liquid Express). For a lighter look for A/W leave these products on for 6 hours then wash off. Use a thick moisturiser to stop your skin drying out – I love Sisley Confort Extreme Body Cream.
Tanning for Blonde hair
Dark Hair
For the tan to look great with a dark skintone and dark hair colour you need to go for a product that still matches your skintone, so shop around but you also want it to give a mediterranean look to the skin, think Cheryl Cole and who is always sporting the 70s Retro Tan, which is deep in colour.
Go for a lotion tan, this last longer on the skin and also suits dark skintones. My favourite for this is Fake Bake original self tan lotion. For best application apply with a tanning mitt, this allows for even applications, no streaks. For the winter months if you want it to be lighter, then rub mosituriser over your skin with a tanning mitt before you apply the self tan.
