BBC Two and BBC Four may change the way we think or have thought about beauty. The channels will correspondingly present The Modern Beauty Season, a collection of films focusing on beauty of the past, beauty of today, and ideals of beauty that may come. Mark Bell, the BBC Commissioning Editor for the Arts has commented, “We look forward to shedding new light on the big questions: Has modern art lost touch with the public? Are classical values still possible in the modern era? And what do we mean when we talk about beauty?” BBC Two will also debate modern versus classical art with two separate films on the channel.

The first film is authored by Waldemar Januszczak who will support modern art and searching for beauty in the ugly. Roger Scruton will support classical standards of beauty in art in the second film. Also on the channel, Matthew Collings will be presenting the ideals of beauty throughout the ages in a filmed aptly titled, This Is Beauty. BBC Four will be hosting a documentary created by historian and art expert Gus Casely-Hayford who will discuss British art today.

The main highlight of this Beauty Season will be Saatchi’s Art Stars on BBC Two, a short (only 4 episodes) competition series searching for the next new British artist. Avoid the mugginess of a hot summer night and stay in with the girls or your boy and learn a little something about perceptions of beauty. Visit www.bbc.co.uk for nightly schedules.
