Womanity Theirry Mulger

Womanity Theirry Mulger

It’s not unusual for new fragrances to be launched with a fanfare, but when the perfume in question is Thierry Mugler’s Womanity, you can rest assured that the hype is probably justified. Additionally, the fact that Mr Mugler is also a fashion designer and photographer means the whole shebang – from the packaging to the advertising campaign – is going to be pretty easy on the eye. To start with, Thierry Mugler announced the fragrance with the creation of an interactive website, www.womanity.com, to which he later uploaded a short film, “Is She You”, both of which celebrate women in a creative, unique format that’s definitely worth checking out.

Now for the perfume itself. Described as a “symbol of femininity” the unusual fragrance contains notes of citrus, fig, leather, and more unusually, caviar, the latter being the result of a process known as “molecular distillation”, which basically means the creators have artificially – but accurately – recreated the scent of caviar.

While I certainly don’t consider myself the kind of person to turn their nose up at fragrances that venture “outside the box” I’m the first to admit that many such fragrances simply don’t float my orafractory boat, but Womanity, however, is different in every sense of the word. It works. It’s rich, distinctive and delicious, but Mugler fans will be relieved to hear that the sweet, rich notes he’s become famous for are definitely still in evidence. As for the caviar notes, there’s a definite saltiness but nothing that seems out of place – rather a further aspect to the fragrance that sets it apart and gives it a certain “je ne sais quoi.”

And seriously, don’t get me started on the packaging. Think pink – but not overly so – with a definite nod to eastern mysticism, thanks to tall, totem-esque bottles and chunky, metal lids bearing intricate designs.

Even my boyfriend loves the fragrance  – although, being a science geek, admittedly it was the “molecular distillation” bit that initially got his interest, however I’m definitely concerned that I’ll come home one day to find him spritzing the fragrance onto his shirt collar.

I could go on, but to be honest, I could literally talk about this fabulous fragrance until the cows come home, so instead, I’ll simply suggest you head down to Selfridges and sniff it out for yourself.

Thierry Mugler’s Womanity is currently available at Selfridges with prices starting at £19 for a 10ml refillable eau de parfum spray. The range also has a 30ml, 50ml and 30ml bottle, as well as a 50ml “Eco Source” eau de parfum refill bottle, and a body lotion, body cream and shower gel.
