Treatment of the Fortnight: Hershesons Blow Dry Bar

Ah, I do like this time of year. The sun is shining, wine is flowing, boys are looking dishy in their short sleeved shirts and a holiday romance is but a few weeks away. Whilst this is a frolicking, fun time, there are certain beauty matters that arise in this hot and humid atmosphere. Waxing, tanning, teasing, shaping, painting, tweezing, cutting, polishing; these are just some of the words that sum up the all important summer grooming regime (and it’s never too early to start!)

Dare to show a toe that is not perfectly painted or a hint of patchy fake tan and you’ll incur the wrath of well heeled women everywhere. On that note, it’s time to focus on the final, perhaps most important concern. That’s right, the crowning glory, your hair.

Your hair speaks volumes about who you are and how much you care about your appearance so it’s paramount that it looks immaculate, at least most of the time. Even powerhouses like Hillary Clinton have spoken of the importance of the ‘do. In her 2001 Yale commencement address, she warned graduating female students “Pay attention to your hair, because everyone else will.” Now, we may not necessarily agree that Hillary sports an up-to-the-minute crop but at least she puts in the effort. Frizzy, unkempt hair will do you no favours, no matter what profession you’re in.

With this in mind, this week I have decided to focus on the subject of the perfect blow dry – i.e. simple to book, won’t break the beauty bank and doesn’t look like you’ve been to a ‘granny’ salon. Combine busy lifestyles with the need to look our coiffed best, even in these humid temperatures, and you could drive yourself mad (and poor) trying to get a weekly appointment at your hairdresser of choice. Surely there must be a quicker, more accessible and cheaper alternative out there?

Eh voila! Tucked away in the lower echelons of Topshop (far enough away from the crowds) sits the Hershesons Blow Dry Bar. The Hershesons (a father and son outfit) are known in the hairdressing industry as style trend setters and for enabling real women to achieve catwalk styles in a more manageable way. You could say that they bridge the gap between salon, photo session and catwalk.

They began to notice that there was a gap in the market for a salon style environment that offered high fashion hair and quality styling but at an affordable price and with no appointment necessary. What was their solution? A Hersheson outpost in the fashion mecca, Topshop. For the first time you could walk in, browse a hair menu of 8 styles and let them do the rest. The whole experience should take just 30 minutes and set you back a mere £21.

I decided to go along to see it in action…

I arrived at Topshop just before 6pm and fought my way through the tidal wave of shoppers to the relative calm of the Blow Dry Bar. I checked myself in with the attentive maître d’ and sat down in front of the mirror ready for a speedy transformation. I had chosen to have the ‘Wavy Gravy’ style which would change my hair from flat and boring to big and bouncy. As I waited for my stylist, I had a chance to glance around the cosy confines of the Bar to see what everyone was having. One girl was having her hair beautifully straighted, one was having the Bardot (a messy up-do) and one girl sat down and said ‘the usual’. It was clear that this place catered for a variety of clients and had lots of regulars.

It was soon my turn and before I knew it my hair was being teased and curled to perfection. As my stylist busily worked through my hair, I continued to watch what was happening around me. This place was a real ‘hive’ of activity with women bustling in and sashying out in the blink of an eye. It was fun just to sit back and watch. As I had the finishing touches applied and admired my new reflection, there was a large line of anxious ladies all waiting their turn.

Overall I had a great experience at the Hershesons Blow Dry Bar and I was very impressed with the standard of service. It’s a great value, professional service which offers so many good, wearable styles. It’s the perfect place to go for a last minute party pamper or equally great for a quick pick-me-up. Ok, it’s not particularly glamorous surroundings but it’s clean and tidy and offers the same kind of service that you’d get expect at a good salon. I headed out to a party afterwards and received so many compliments about my new look. I’ll most definitely be returning to try out all the other styles. I suggest you do too!
