2012 Billboard Music Awards

2012 Billboard Music Awards

There was lots going on during this past sundays Billboard Music Awards. Taking place in Las Vegas’ MGM Grand, the Billboard Music Awards included daring fashion, new music, and poignant performances in honor to musics recently departed.

Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus wore a white Jean Paul Gaultier tuxedo dress paired with black and white Christian Louboutin peeptoes. The hair gives us a little ’90′s nostalgia, a little Jennifer Aniston The Rachel inspiration perhaps? Critics are often quick to suggest that Miley dresses too mature for age, but  we happen to think the tux-dress looks great on her.

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift ditched her trademark curls for a sleek and seriously edgy look. In red Elie Saab and heels, we adore the bondage style lace cut out bodice, throw the newly straightened hair and sharp bangs, and this becomes one of our favourite looks on Taylor who won the Woman of the Year award.

Katy Perry

Katy Perry

It was a spectacular night for Katy Perry. Not only did she took her grandmother as her date, which we love! She also wore this beautiful mermaid-esque lilac Blumarine gown, performed her new song Wide Awake and received the Spotlight Award which celebrates five No. 1′s from her Teenage Dream album. An accolade that stands her alongside Michael Jackson and the Bad album – and the only woman to have done so.

Also debuting new music was Nelly Furtado who debuted Big Hoops from upcoming album The Spirit Indestructible due in stores this summer, Kelly Clarkson debuted her new single Dark Side and Linkin Park rocked the house with a performance of single Burn It Down.

Sadly, we’ve had to mourn some of the most phenomenal talents in the music industry recently, and they were properly honored during the award ceremony. Whitney Houston was awarded the Millennium Award received by her daughter Bobbi Kristina. Whoopi Goldberg took the stage to deliver a moving tribute to the singer’s life. John Legend and Jordin Sparks (Houston’s co-star in upcoming film Sparkle) performed I Will Always Love You. Donna Summers was honored by Natasha Beddingfield’s rendition of Last Dance but was unfortunately cut off by commercials. Cee Lo Green performed Fight For Your Right to honor The Beastie Boys‘ recently passed away Adam Yauch. And finally, Robin Gibb was honored by an impromptu moment of silence during the award ceremony, the iconic Bee Gees singer had passed away earlier in the day.

On a ligher note, Adele, as expected, swept the award show receiving 12 awards for album 21. Unfortunately she was not there to accept her awards. We wonder if the show went by faster since Adele wasn’t there to pick them up!
