The cast of The Help accept a 2012 SAG Award for Best Cast

Stars lined the red carpet last night at the Shrine Exposition Centre in Los Angeles for the 18th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. The women of The Help swept the show, winning 3 major awards including Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Cast.

Viola Davis, who won Best Actress for her work in the drama about the lives of housekeepers in the 1960s south, said she was “so proud” to be honoured and that “you can’t trade in your dream for another dream.”

Cast member and winner of Best Supporting Actress, Octavia Spencer, added that she hoped the film gave people a voice.

“These women represented our mothers and grandmothers, and it was their courage and them facing the challenges that they faced every day in living their life in dignity and grace,” Spencer said.

Betty White, Kate Winslet, Steve Buscemi and the cast of Modern Family also received nods at the ceremony, while Mary Tyler Moore went home with a Lifetime Achievement award for her work in film and television.
