Alicia Keys works with the Keep a Child Alive AIDS charity

Several of our favourite celebs will be saying goodbye to Twitter and other social media sites.  Alicia Keys, Justin Timberlake and Lady Gaga will all be signing off starting Wednesday (01.12.10) to raise awareness and funds to support World AIDS Day.

The stars will not return to social media until they have raised $1 million for the AIDS charity Keep a Child Alive—which is spearheaded by Alicia.

Alicia said no one she has approached had turned her down, explaining, “Once I got people on the phone and I was able to paint the concept for them, everybody was in”.

Kim and Khloe Kardashian, Usher, Jennifer Hudson, Ryan Seacrest, Elijah Wood and Alicia’s husband Swizz Beatz will also be participating.

For the campaign, the stars have filmed “last tweet and testament” videos and will appear in adverts showing them lying in coffins to represent their ‘digital deaths’.

The president and co-founder of Keep a Child Alive, Leigh Blake, said, “We’re trying to sort of make the remark: Why do we care so much about the death of one celebrity as opposed to millions and millions of people dying in the pace that we’re all from?”

Almost all the stars involved have over a million followers on micro-blogging site twitter, with Gaga alone having 7.2 million.

We’re sure with this much star power behind the charity, it is sure to meet its goal!  To donate to Keep a Child Alive click here!
