Bridget Jones The Musical?!

The musical version of Bridget Jones’s Diary is reportedly in the works and may open in the West End as early as next year. Original author Helen Fielding is said to be writing, with Billy Elliott director and choreographer Stephen Daldry and Peter Darling also reported to be attached to the project.

The twist? Lily Allen has been writing the music for the stage production. Though she claimed she was retiring from music, Lily said, “Everyone thinks it’s just one or two songs. But I’ve now had ten accepted and they look to be making the final cut for the show.”

It makes sense for her lyrics to be paired with the single-girl bible, since most of her lyrics are about rocky love lives and female antics. And she seems happy to refrain from retirement to work on the project. “I’m hugely proud of this and it’s something I’ve worked really bloody hard on. The money would be great but it’s being recognised as a songwriter and lyricist that truly excites me.”

The production seems well on its way to becoming a hit. I wonder if Renee Zellwegger will gain back the weight and return to the stage? Either way it seems Miss Allen’s ‘retirement’ from music was less the short lived…
