Ewan McGregor

Ewan McGregor started his career with the film Shallow Grave. On set he formed a good relationship with his director, Danny Boyle, resulting in him going on to cast Ewan as a recovering heroine-addict in Trainspotting, a role that effectively put him on ‘the map’.

Since then, he has starred as a huge variety of characters. He was the young Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars, a penniless writer in love with a courtesan in Moulin Rouge, and has been everything in the middle. Plus, he was offered the role of James Bond when the franchise decided to remake Casino Royale, but, luckily for Daniel Craig, he didn’t take the role for fear of being typecast!

There is one rule McGregor abides by and it is to never set boundaries. He will never tell himself he is only going to do Hollywood films because he fears that the second you do that, you are boxed into a certain genre. If he likes the script and the character, he is willing to do anything. This is why he has worked on multimillion-dollar projects, small indie films, and West End productions.

McGregor’s most recent endeavour just hit cinemas earlier this month. Working alongside Jim Carrey, I Love You Phillip Morris is a comedy about two prison inmates who fall in love. It is full of twists and goofy scenes, including one of them slow dancing in a prison cell.

Having been happily married to French production designer Eve Mavrakis for 15 years, McGregor certainly isn’t gay, but he has played a homosexual in two other films, The Pillow Book and Velvet Goldmine. While promoting this film, he was asked who he would want to be in a relationship with if he were interested in men, and he answered Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

Ewan is an ambassador for UNICEF, and has gone to Africa several times to visit children affected by HIV/AIDS. As an avid motorcyclist, Ewan has also biked through Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Mongolia to see the work being done there. For the past two years, he has hosted the annual Hollywood gala for UNICEF to raise money to the organization.

Madonna will by trying her hand at directing later this year, and has cast Ewan as Edward VIII in the film, W.E. Vera Farmiga and Abbie Cornish have also signed on for this project. Madonna, in hopes of making the film as authentic as possible, has asked to film on location at the Royal Grounds, but we wouldn’t be surprised if the Queen vetoed this request… we doubt there’s room enough for the two of them!

I Love You Phillip Morris is out in Cinemas now.
