After yet more upset to it’s 400m users this week over more changes to its privacy settings, Facebook’s founder, Mark Zuckerberg, is in for a dose of invasion of privacy himself with the forthcoming film “The Social Network”.

The film (based on the non-fiction novel by Ben Mezrich, The Accidental Billionaires) chronicles the founding of the social-networking website Facebook by Zuckerberg 6 years ago. The site was created by Zuckerberg in a “tidal wave” of grief after being dumped by his girlfriend. The film opens on this event where his then girlfriend, Erica, tells him he will “go through life thinking that girls don’t like you because you’re a tech geek”. The reality, she says, is rather more upsetting: “I want you to know, from the bottom of my heart, that that won’t be true. It’ll be because you’re an asshole.” Ouch!

In the film Zuckerberg retreats to his college dormitory where, in a drunken fit, he writes the computer code turning Harvard’s annual collection of student photos/biogs into a website where he and his male friends rank Harvard women as barnyard animals. Thirty minutes after “Thefacebook” goes live, it is so popular that it crashes Harvard’s computer network. Yeah I think his girlfriend was right!

Zuckerberg (played by Jesse Eisenberg) then drops out of college, moves to Silicon Valley in California where he builds Facebook with Sean Parker (co-founder of Napster, played by Justin Timberlake). The early operation was funded by Harvard twins Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss who wanted Zuckerberg to create a social network for their athletic friends. Zuckerberg agreed but according to the film he then cut them out as Facebook took off across the US college circuit. This led to a court battle, which in 2008 reportedly ended with the twins being awarded $65m (£44m).

The Social Network“, produced by Kevin Spacey and directed by David Fincher, is currently in production, and due for release in October. Now I’m twitter fan myself, you may have noticed, but I will be taking time off hootsuite to go see this one.
