The 27-year-old Abbie Cornish has already experienced a flourishing acting career, but likely has many successful endeavors in her future. Born to a recycling businessman and a photographer mother in 1982, Cornish grew up in her hometown of Lochinvar, New South Wales, Australia. Her career in the spotlight began at age thirteen, when she began taking modeling jobs. By sixteen, she was balancing time between television roles and her (since abandoned) studies to become a veterinarian.
Her breakthrough in Australian television came with her role on ABC’s show Wildside, for which she won the Australian Film Institute’s Young Actor’s Award. Because of this role, she was offered her first feature film opportunity in The Monkey’s Mask (2000). Next, she played Reggie McDowell on the popular Australian show Outriders. She earned international prominence in 2004 with the film Somersault, not to mention a slew of Australian and film festival awards. Critical acclaim followed with 2006’s Candy, in which she starred opposite Heath Ledger.
Her latest projects have truly spurred her popularity. These include A Good Year, the award-winning Elizabeth: The Golden Age, and the American hit Stop-Loss. Now, she is starring opposite English actor Ben Whishaw in Jane Campion’s most recent film, Bright Star. It follows the tragic love affair between the 19th century poet John Keats and—quite literally—the girl next door. It premieres at the London Film Festival this year.
Beyond her acting accolades, Cornish has enjoyed other types of recognition. Maxim named her #80 on their Hot List in 2007. Similarly, she was voted Australia’s Hottest Vegetarian in 2008; she has been a vegetarian since the age of thirteen. She is currently dating Ryan Phillippe, rumour has it that she was the reason for the Ryan/Reese split…but I guess we’ll never know.
