Charlize Theron has the uncanny ability to captive audiences, even as a serial killer. Born in Benoni, South Africa, to parents of French and German descent, she moved to America to pursue a better life than she would have had in her small town. Originally trained as a ballet dancer in Africa, she was discovered by an agent in Los Angeles at age 18, after a promise to learn English. Charlize did so by watching her mother’s afternoon soap operas. Eight months later, audiences were first introduced to her irresistible charm in her film debut, “2 Days in the Valley”, alongside James Spader and Eric Stoltz. She also co-starred with Keanu Reeves in the 1994 flick Devil’s Advocate, Tom Hanks in That Thing You Do, and Trial and Error directed by Jonathan Lynn. And who can forget her appearance in the tearjerker Mighty Joe Young with Bill Paxton. In 2000, our favourite blonde bombshell undertook back-to-back roles in: The Legend of Bagger Vance, Men of Honor, Reindeer Games, and The Yards, which co-starred Joaquin Phoneix, James Caan, and Faye Dunaway.

Five years and handfuls of on-screen successes later, Theron captivated filmgoers as the female serial killer Alleen Wuornos in Monster. (The slim and trim actress had to gain over thirty pounds to become Alleen.) She received the Independent Spirit Award, and several film critic awards from San Francisco and New York, along with a Golden Globe for the role. Next, Theron starred as Josey Aimes in the North Country drama, earning nominations for another GG, SAG, Critics Choice, and an Oscar. (When Charlize acts, she pulls out all the stops.) Other major roles include with Sony Classics “Head In The Clouds”, and the Paramount motion picture Aeon Flux, based on a series from MTV.

But her life doesn’t exist solely in front of cameras. Believe it or not, Charlize Theron is just as captivating off screen as on. And for a woman dubbed “most beautiful” by magazines in three different countries (Taiwan, America, and Brazil) she’s as humble as she is stunning. She’s even said, “Looks alone won’t get you that far. It may get you in the door, but there’s always somebody younger, somebody prettier. You have to rely on something else.” Theron lives in Los Angeles with long-time boyfriend Stuart Townsend. She has stated that she will not marry Stuart until same-sex marriages are able to do the same.

While filming Aeon Flux in Berlin, Theron suffered a herniated disc in her neck, sporting a neck collar for over a month. This didn’t hinder her acting ability, of course; directors still fawn over her. And they’re not the only ones: in 2004, Theron replaced another model to be the face of Christian Dior, and in 2006 earned over 3 million dollars for a campaign of Raymond Weil watches. But this fashion model isn’t at all plastic: she’s marched for abortion rights, and animal rights supporters such as PETA.

This 33 year-old vixen is not only turning heads…she’s breaking necks. Charlize’s career is far from over, so watch out for her 2009 flick The Road. She’s a supermodel turned movie star turned down-to-earth hippie chick: a stereotype buster if there ever was one.
