Coachella 2010

Last weekend, people fled the Hollywood Hills for the Empire Polo Fields in Indio, California, the site of the 11th annual Coachella Music and Arts Festival.

Referred to as the “Woodstock of the 2000s,” the festival was completely sold out for 2010. Attendance was up 15,000 people from last year and people camped, slept in cars, and stayed in nearby hotels for the three-day-long festivities.

Being so close to LA, celebrities flooded the festival grounds, mostly sporting hippie chic clothing and giant sunglasses to blend in with other festival patrons.

Alexa Chung and her boyfriend, Arctic Monkeys’ front man Alex Turner, had to sneak their way into the VIP section after she lost her wristband during Hot Chip’s performance.

Paris Hilton was seen without her high heels and her reported ex, Doug Reinhardt, as she enjoyed herself with her sister Nicky, and Kate Bosworth and her beau, True Blood actor Alexander Skarsgard, were inseparable for most of the weekend.

Jay-Z and Beyonce

Other stars were also spotted  such as; John Mayer, Kristen Stewart (without R-Patz), Zac Efron, and Anne Hathaway.

But there were some people missing. Seven bands in the line-up could not make it from Europe to California because of the Icelandic volcano, including British rock bands Cribs and Frightened Rabbits. Sean Hutchinson of Frightened Rabbits was excited for the festival because it would have been their first performance in the US. I guess they’ll just have to wait for their tour later his year to play in the States.

Jay-Z stole the show when he brought his wife, and pop sensation, Beyonce onstage for a duet of “Young Forever.” We are seriously jealous of anyone who got to see that live, but, then again, we probably would have fainted from happiness, so it might be a good thing we were absent. Thom Yorke had some great Radiohead covers, while Muse covered both Nirvana and Jimi Hendrix. Finally, The Gorillaz closed the festival with a memorable show featuring a number of special guests, including De La Soul and Bobby Womack.

I don’t think the Californian desert has ever been so hot! We can’t wait to see what it has in store for us next year… Watch this space.
