Whether you know him as the lovesick man in Love Actually, the eye of Bridget Jones’s affection, Mark Darcy, or the Mr. Darcy of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, you know Colin Firth is truly one of the greatest actors of our generation. Having proved his skills time and time again, he does it once more in Tom Ford’s A Single Man, to be released in February. When his lover of 16 years, played by Matthew Goode, dies in a car crash, Firth’s character George, an English professor, contemplates if life is still worth living. His performance has been described as incredible, one of the greatest, and there is already Oscar buzz surrounding it. I fancied him for the first time in a movie, which is ironic as its his first gay role.

This movie is full of surprises, even an onscreen kiss with Matthew Goode. When asked about the preparation for this scene, Firth jokingly insists there was no need for shots of Tequila because Goode was such a good kisser.

There are also several serious scenes, including one where he receives a phone call telling him he is not welcome at his dead partner’s funeral because his lover’s family refuses to acknowledge the deceased was, in fact, gay. Ironically, the day they filmed this scene was the same day Proposition 8 was passed in California, limiting marriage only to heterosexual couples. This got Firth thinking, “maybe we are still in 1962,” wondering if not much progress has actually been made since then.

Although Tom Ford worked on every last detail of the movie, he gave the actors artistic freedom to develop their characters and didn’t force them to act in a specific way. Through this process, Firth was able to fully understand life as George, which he thoroughly enjoyed.

Firth is now working on a film with Helena Bonham Carter and Guy Pearce called The King’s Speech. It details the relationship between King George VI and his speech therapist as he tried to silence his stutter.
