Drew Barrymore has been on camera since before her first birthday starring in a dog food commercial. She then made her film debut in Altered States when she was 5 years old. After starring as Elliott’s younger sister Gertie in E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, she became one of the most recognizable child actresses, known for her comedic roles. Within a year she was nominated for her first award, the BAFTA award’s Best Newcomer, and became the youngest Saturday Night Live host ever.

Being a child star was rough for Barrymore. Once she reached double digits, she made regular appearances at her favourite club Studio 54, smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol, and snorting cocaine. She went to rehab for the first time when she was 13, then again at 14 after attempting suicide. In 1990, she wrote the memoir Little Girl Lost, explaining her chaotic childhood.

Once she was sober, she decided to return to the screen in romantic comedies like The Wedding Singer and Home Fries. She then formed the production company Flower Films with business partner Nancy Juvonen. The company’s first film was Never Been Kissed starring Barrymore, followed by both Charlie’s Angels films. When Barrymore caught wind that Richard Kelly’s film Donnie Darko had to stop mid-production for financial reasons, she decided to step in and help pay for the remainder of the project, casting herself in the small role of the title character’s English teacher. The movie didn’t do too well in the box office, but it has since become a cult classic. She has also starred in 50 First Dates, Fever Pitch, and, recently, He’s Just Not That Into You.

After spending so much time in front of the camera, Barrymore decided to try her hand at directing. Whip It, starring Juno’s Ellen Page, appealed to Barrymore because she loves scripts about women who can do anything a man can do.

Having been married and divorced twice, Barrymore is also well known for her off-screen romances. Her first marriage to Welsh bartender Jeremy Thomas only lasted one month in 2004. She was then married to Tom Green, who made a cameo in the first Charlie’s Angels movie. They were divorced within a year as well. Her longest relationship was with The Strokes drummer Fabrizio Moretti, which lasted for 5 years after they met at a concert. Her most recent relationship with Justin Long ended in 2008. She is set to star opposite him in Going the Distance, out this fall, and, since they have been spending so much time filming together, rumous has it they have rekindled the flame and are on-again.

Drew stars in the very moving family drama, Everybody’s Fine alongside Robert DeNiro, Sam Rockwell and Kate Beckinsale out this Friday.  Paul McCartney wrote a ballad for the film, which was nominated for the Golden Globe for best song.
