2010 has already been a busy year for up-and-coming singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding. She has been nominated for MTV’s top 10 new artists of 2010 and was named BBC’s sound of 2010. Her debut album Lights is available March 1st with the hit single Starry Eyed already invading our airways.

Growing up in the countryside, Goulding learned how to play the guitar and write her own folk-inspired music at age 15. While studying at the University of Kent, she was introduced to electronic music, which has influenced her ever since.

FrankMusic, who she contacted via Myspace, help her develop her sound, and, after posting her song to her Myspace page, out of nowhere, she had 100,000 plays within months. After this collaboration, it was suggested for her to work with Starsmith. After an awkward first encounter in the studio, they have an excellent relationship, usually spent making fun of each other rather than making music.

Goulding signed to Polymer Records in September 2009, but her first single Under the Sheets was released under Neon Gold Records, so she wouldn’t be under too much pressure.

She has previously toured the UK with Little Boots, and, although there are currently no plans for her own tour, if everything goes according to plan, she will be in the near future. If she had unlimited amounts of funds, her tour would have bright lights, crazy costumes, a drum line, and a huge teenage choir. One thing keeping her from touring is the lack of a band. Currently on the search, she has a few conditions: they must love T-Payne and the series “Nighty Night.”

Her ideal duet partner? That is Missy Elliot. She jokes that if they did collaborate, they would write their lyrics underneath the California sunset. She has several favourite songs, but the one that brings back the fondest memories is “Boys Don’t Cry,” by The Cure. When she hears the drums, guitars, and vocals, it causes her to reminisce on her teenage years.

Of course as is standard with any new artists the comparisons have started, having been likened to Cerys Matthews and described as the next Kate Nash, Ellie refuses to be pigeonholed and instead admires male artists because of what they believe in and write about.
